On a nice sunny night, but a bit chilly, 13 “athletes” set off on the first of the 2026 summer NiteNavs from Gribdale, some set off to checkpoint 1 and some set off to checkpoint 8, which is good to see as it’s then not a procession. All is calm for about an hour then first back is David A with a head wound, (just under the hour), taking risks by cutting corners and crashing through the woods to C/P 8. After that it was a steady stream of runners and walkers arriving back at the finish having done different routes and tales of fighting with undergrowth and showing off blood spattered legs. Some strange routes taken but that’s the beauty of a NiteNav, sometimes the short route isn’t necessarily the quickest. The visit to the pub was probably the most complicated part of the night, with the idea to go to the Buck but the roadworks had everyone confused and finally we ended up  in the Royal Oak. Well done to all and many thanks to all who turned out, Mark 👍.

To make the most of the evening with the days drawing out I had stated beforehand that an early start would be available and that there would be no time penalties so that walkers and plodders could get round the six mile course comfortably before the usual eight o’clock finish time. Unfortunately, due to other priorities, several regulars were unable to attend and therefore numbers were down with only six Smellys taking part in my NiteNav. That was a shame as while I was recceing the route I realised how picturesque the area was this time of year with an abundance of bluebells throughout the course and was hoping everyone would enjoy it just as I did. Now to the race result and congratulations go to the winner, Vince, completing the full course, which included 1,400ft of climb, in the fastest time. Mark was second also completing the full course without any issues. Third was Dave T who confessed to confusion on Cold Moor resulting in missing CP9. Finally, Bob, Steve and Mick ambled round in just under three hours having had a lovely evening choosing not to bother with the moorland controls. I have to own up to misplacing CP7 a bit too low on the map but the blue water pipe in the map’s red circle led Vince, Mark and DaveT to the intended target, the cistern. Well done to all, Bref.

The original date for my NiteNav was for the previous Tuesday, 2nd June, but due to horrendous rain I decided to abandon it until the following Tuesday, tonight the 9th. However, within 15 minutes, whilst most had either gone home or on to the Voyager, the sun came out and Mark, Bref and Ian H managed to go for a run on what turned into a lovely night. Anyway, I decided to start the rearranged NiteNav for 5:00pm to give any walkers a chance of completing the 6.5 mile course. However, on arrival I that that it was going to be a bit of deja vous as the heavens opened up again with a rather heavy rain and hail shower but, fortunately it was short-lived. The first walkers, Len and Ken, started out at 5:15pm as the weather cleared into a sunny evening, albeit an odd shower during. First back was Paul Haydon but hadn't intended to complete the course by only bagging 9 of the 13 controls. Next back was Mark Edwards who did complete all controls but had to wait a while for the other runners to return. Last man out and winner was Ian Hodgson who completed the course beating Mark into second place, by over 10 minutes. Third place went to a battle scarred Dave T who beat his way through the overgrowth not realising that there was an easy path to the mine entrance gate, via the reservoir. Ouch! Len Small and Ken Wilson had a really good walk/jog round the course, in a clockwise direction (as did Dave T) whilst most went in numerical order, anticlockwise.
Thanks to all who turned out and for the positive comments - sorry Dave......
Hope to see you at the next NiteNav which is organised by Dave T and Caroline G (hope you don't try to get your own back Dave............, Bill.

High cloud, warm with a breeze and no midge, perfect conditions for the eleven eager NiteNavers tackling the Percy Rigg course, which was completed by all before a short shower arrived. A big thank you to Caroline, my beautiful assistant, who put in a lot of work in creating the course. She was unable to attend on the night due to family commitments, so I had to recruit Sam as my assistant who loved the chips.
It turned out to be a race of three categories: - Runners, Plodders and Walkers, the latter (Len & Steve 80 +) being the only two taking advantage of the over 70’s free controls, which made the final run-in by the latter two groups rather interesting. Trev was a bit disappointed as he didn’t realise there were freebies for over 70’s - anyway, he doesn’t look old enough to be in that category. Graeme T was the only one who took a direct line from CP 7 to the finish. This caused great interest as he was the last to go and could have made the difference to the final result, all watched as he came off Codhill Heights and disappeared out of sight before tackling the steep hill to the finish. Alas, it didn’t but all agreed it was definitely quicker than going the long way round on good tracks. Vince took first place, with the top five, all within 9 minutes. Very close competition indeed. I accept the criticism of the accuracy of the location of CP3, but CP4 is where Ordnance Survey believes it to be!!!
Finally, thank you to everyone who didn’t respond and turned out on the night. It helped enormously towards having the right quantity of maps, with very little waste. You are definitely my go to group for banter and fun, Dave T.
Hope to see you at the next NiteNav which is organised by Terry C and Alan R on 28th July from Castleton top end CP, Bill.
