After decades of NiteNavs, finding a new location has become increasingly difficult, as has the availability of free parking these days. During Covid I came across St Hilda’s church and originally had it mind to use it as a DayNav starting point hopefully when the bluebells were in flower. Though I never got the opportunity to use it as a DayNav, which would have included local features like the Buckingham Stone and the Ship Stone. Last night I finally got the chance to put on a shorter NiteNav which still allowed for visiting some interesting local features like the Cobbler’s cottage and the Low Cable Stone and of course the bluebells. A good turnout of eleven competitors set off on a fine spring evening leaving me time to wander around the old churchyard. David Allison was the fastest over the six mile course in an impressive 1 hour and 16 minutes, while Vince Connolly was second, eleven minutes behind. Ian Hodgson was third nearly seven minutes quicker than fourth placed Mark Edwards. A bit of a time gap then before Wai and then Bob and Dave T followed by Bill. Finally at a more leisurely pace Steve, Len and Mick choosing to visit some of the nearby controls. Well done everyone. I appreciated the positive feedback from everyone which makes it all worthwhile, Bref.

I chose Gribdale again for my NiteNav because it’s local and I can recce the area as often as I like and there’s plenty of control possibilities. The night was calm and fairly mild, as 11 athletes set out on a course that I hoped would be a challenge but not so much that it wouldn’t be enjoyable. What I hoped to see was runners taking different routes and talking after and looking at the Strava routes that certainly happened, thanks everyone for coming along, Regards, Mark Edwards.

When trying to decide on a course/route I had a bit of a 'lightbulb' moment. Looking at the map and walking round the woods I realised that I would be able to plan a course purely using air shafts, fire sumps and dangerous drop fences. It was just a matter of finding the right ones in order to give the runners a decent run out and walkers to either get all or most of the controls. I was a bit worried given the earlier rain but come 5pm the sun came out and we had perfect weather. I decided to give walkers the opportunity to walk the course earlier in the day or begin at 5pm, as well as drop the 2 hour time limit, so they could bag all the controls. When I put the controls out I covered just over 10km. What I hadn't banked on was getting between control No 10 & 11 directly. Also, I thought that pretty much everyone would go round in numerical order - WRONG! After discussions afterwards ot seemed clear that goung round in reverse order was great for a direct route from 10 to 11 i.e. up the bankside. Well done to winner David Allison who shot round in just over the hour and 12 minutes ahead of 2nd place Graeme Tweddle who, at the start didn't think he would fair very well - WRONG! Great run Graeme. Third place was Paul Haydon, again 12 minutes later. I felt sorry for Bob Howe who failed to bag the last (No.11) control saying he couldn't find it. From Strava it would appear that he was only about 30m short from it...... From all the discussions afterwards everyone seemed to enjoy the course and I was amazed to see all the various route choices that I had thought about. Thanks for everyone who went round - a great turnout.

It was a very wet Tuesday when I prepared to go over to Cod Beck to set up the NiteNav course. The forecast promised a weather window between 5 and 7 O’clock, so I was optimistic. Anyway, Bref reckons it never rains on a Tuesday nights. Just as I was setting off I got word the road to Chequers was closed, this proved to be untrue and thankfully no diversions or changes to plan were required. The clip was put in place for CP5 and I met Caroline at the Chequers junction. Steve and Mick were first away at 17:30 and Vince last at 18:14. I offered those over 70 a free control, which was taken up by Len, Steve, and Mick. Bill missed out as he was running with Len. First back was Mark in 1:04:00, followed by Paul, Ian and then Bref, all in by 7 O’clock. The night was still young and the weather was still warm and dry. A minute later when Len and Bill finished the rain had started and very quickly developed into biblical proportions, by the time Graeme and Vince finished the road was beginning to look like a river. The minutes ticked by and two hours after Steve and Mick set off, the time I expected them to finish by, there was no sign. Graeme and Vince hung around, just in case something had gone wrong. a further 20 minutes passed and thunder and lightning added a sombre tone to the situation. Vince set off to see if they had dropped out and returned from Codbeck end. Whilst Caroline and I drove down the drove road to see if there was any sign. Eventually two drowned rats appeared and refused to get in the car “You're not going to give us a DNF” so they trotted off down the road to the finish with lightning lighting them up as if they had been x ray'd ! ! ! As they say all is well that ends well. Congratulations to Graeme who came first followed by Ian, Vince and then Mark, all within 7 minutes. I think the handicap system is worth exploring a bit more, it certainly didn’t affect the expected results and would have normally have had runners back in a closer time, Dave.

We had brilliant weather and a good turnout. Vince was first home just 10 seconds quicker than David A. We hoped we had picked an area that hadn’t been visited recently but apparently ‘the runners’ had been in the vicinity some weeks before.
The route was fairly straight forward and it was just a decision of clock (Down the hill to Hob Hole at start) or anti clock (up hill at the end). Odd thing, originally control 3 was to have been about the lock on the gate but when I checked the route the week before it was unlocked. Looking for something else I spotted the butt - tight up against the wall corner – unusual I thought. I had passed it numerous times recently and had never noticed it – possibly because I am vertically challenged? Terry.

On a beautiful sunny evening 9 runners & walkers went out to enjoy the moors and footpaths around Commondale.
I wanted to set a course that was runnable and challenging and not too overgrown by the summer vegetation. There was plenty of climb for those that got all 9 controls.
Vince just piped Graeme for the win by 18 seconds. The battle for third place was also very tight with Mark being 23 seconds ahead of Trevor (who was having a run out before the Ben Nevis race at the weekend, David.

Steve came up with the route and was 'fine tuned' by me. The idea was to incorporate Glyn West's house in Battersby and use Coleson Bank area, which doesn't appear to have been used for quite some time. The route ended up 5 miles long which would give both runners and walkers a chance to complete course, so I decided to begin at 5:00pm to allow walkers to finish in relative daylight. Fortunately, since the weather was absolutely beautiful there was no need for head torches. I was surprised that there were a few different routes taken between CP 3, the fence corner, just off Coleson Bank and the first of the grouse butts. I think the quickest, and best, route was the main track, i.e. up Coleson Bank and the Cleveland Way.
Congratulations to Vince Connolly who managed to get back under the hour followed by Ian Hodgson 5 minutes later and Mark Edwards in 3rd place. I wonder if Ian could have matched Vince with a different route from CP3 to CP4? Thanks to all who took part.
Hopefully we'll see you all for the winter NiteNav series, Bill & Steve.
