Ten hardy souls took on the challenge of a longer than usual Nitenav in Bilsdale on a sunny early spring evening. I planned the course on a rarely visited certain large “B” stone in Tan Hole which made the distance from Chop Gate car park approximately 6.2 miles or 10k in new money. Ideally I would have preferred the course to be shorter but unfortunately there’s very little parking opportunities in the dale. Despite problems with his leg muscles Ian wizzed round in just over 90 minutes closely followed by David and Graeme. Mark came in next then Bill and Steve of those to complete the full course. Bob unfortunately missed the last control but did manage to visit the stone in Tarn Hole. Richie, Paul and Ken decided on shorter route options. With Tripsdale and Tarn Hole to visit the course was very undulating with a total climb of over 1500 feet. Steve and Bob in particular were very generous in their compliments to me afterwards regarding the toughness of the course. Well done everyone, Bref.

A massive 18 turned out on a warm and sultry night from Gribdale gate including 2 newbies Shelli and Lizzie, 5 and a half miles with 7 controls with a reasonable amount of heather bashing and bracken beating depending on choice of route. I almost ran out of maps because of the turnout with just 1 left and Graeme having the night vision copy as my printer started running out of ink. However, it didn’t hamper him as he came home 2nd. Everyone came home safe and Vince winning the bottle of beer after working out the letters on each control represented the first name initials of some of the Smellys (maybe even some of the elders?).  Thanks to all who came along, Mark.

What a beautiful evening - warm (hot, really) and sunny. The course was set with all of the clues being on rights of way and straight forward to find. This proved to be the case as everyone found them with no issues. First person back was John Wood, who only went out for a 'short loop'. First runner to return was David Allison followed, three minutes later, by Vince Connolly who had to wait to see if there was anyone quicker. Fortunately for him Wai came back but was only 5 seconds slower than Vince. Unlucky Wai.
I have to apologise to all for the condition of the footpath leading to Ayton Firs. When I recce'd the route some 3 or 4 weeks earlier all was fine but, apparently, the Rape had spread across the track making running quite difficult. Sorry guys.  Anyway, well done to winner David A, second place Vince and a very unlucky Wai in third. Thanks to all who turned up, Bill & Steve.
I'm told that Mark's cancelled NiteNav may be resurrected by David Allison, possibly in early July. Watch this space!

The course was planned to include some unexplored check points such as the Ging Gang Goolie Hut, The Watch Tower and the Hidden Pond at the bottom of the incline.  This made the route a little longer than usual, however, Bref and Bob proved us wrong with short cuts. We intentionally left the crossing between Greenhow Plantation and the Incline as a blank canvas and as it proved, everybody took a different route!  Congratulations to John Wood who was the only person to come in under the hour! It was, however, Dave Allison who took the honours in first place by completing all 5 check points in 1 hour 5 minutes. Ian Hodgson finished second and Mark Edwards in third. The ever-youthful Dave Thompson in fourth followed by a close finish by teams Steve & Bill, Bref 7 Bob and Ken & Terry.  I hope you all enjoyed the evening as much as we enjoyed the planning.  Wai & Vince.

11 Hardy souls turned out for our NiteNav from Castleton top car park. It was a wet night!! It rained for almost the full time everybody was out. David Allison was first back despite having twisted his ankle before reaching the first checkpoint and going all round Castleton church looking for point six. Bob Howe complained about being caught out by a low level tree after checkpoint seven and losing his glasses. Perhaps that's why he and Bref seemed to wander round the fields between points two and one (they were doing the route clockwise i.e., checkpoint ten first and one last). Steve (guided by Ken) did the first six checkpoints then came directly back to the car park as time was running out. The route was generally well received with some sections being visited by some for the first time. Although some bracken had been cut down in places the combination of tall bracken and a wet night made going difficult in places. Thanks to all who came and gave it a go, Terry and Alan.

It was a good turnout on the night and everybody seemed to enjoy it, even the ticks! I tried to keep the course simple with it more aimed at route choice. As expected Dave A was quickest round albeit with using the out of bounds road on the way back. Bref reported seeing Vince quite a few times and he still managed to come home second fastest, closely followed by Wai. Dave T was next back with Bref making his usual direct route choices and always keen to get a bit of trespassing in, making him less than 4 minutes behind Dave. The fastest walkers back were the trio of Len, Ken and Terry with Steve and Bill 2 minutes behind just getting under the two hours. Well done all. Thanks, Ian.

We were a bit concerned about how the weather would be as it was very, very windy and had been pouring down during the day. I had looked at the weather forecast on Sunday and decided to put the controls out on Monday morning for that reason. Just as well!! Anyway, it was dry to start with, albeit, still very windy on the tops, so much so that the last control saw the instruction card missing and the cane had broken in half. Fortunately all who ventured to the last control had the sense to realise that this was the final one and returned to the start/finish. The only control to cause problems was No.2, the 10m crag, which was marked slightly high on the map. This did cause poor Paul Haydon quite a bit of extra time. Sorry Paul. This was confirmed by Mark when he collected the control the next morning.
Congratulation to Vince Connolly who blitzed round in just a little over 54 minutes, just over 5 minutes ahead of, second place, Ian Hodgson and Wai Cheung in third.
Thanks to all who took part, especially given the strong winds.
Hopefully we'll see you all for the winter NiteNav series, Bill & Steve.
