A bright but very chilly start to the 2022 summer NiteNavs from Gribdale. Sixteen went out and sixteen came back, which is the aim. The course was about 5.5 miles and was reasonably challenging if all thirteen controls were visited and, hopefully, all the runners and walkers enjoyed it.  I didn't get threatened in the pub afterwards, so I think I got away with it.
Thanks to all who came along, Mark.

The weather stayed fair on the evening so good visibility, which made finding the checkpoints a lot easier as they weren't all with handrails to find them.
I'd kept the course short and not many paths on the ground to slow the runners down. There were quite a few options to straight line as the heather was short and no bracken, the tricky bit was trying to hold the right line when going over rough ground. Everyone found the checkpoints okay which is always a relief as an organiser, I kept it a simple circuit with a fairly obvious clockwise option being the best.
As expected Dave A flew round with no problems locating the checkpoints, followed by Graeme and then Mark. Thanks everyone for turning up and positive feedback.
Cheers, Ian.

What a beautiful evening - warm and sunny. The course was set with all of the clues being on rights of way and straight forward to find. This proved to be the case as everyone found them with no issues. First runner to return was Mark Edward who had to wait it out to see if anyone was quicker. Unfortunately for him, there were four others who managed to come home a bit quicker, all of whom we term 'the fast lads'. There was a mix of runners who went in different directions some wanting to get the climb out of the way by going in an anticlockwise direction whilst others wanted the flat run out and downhill finish. It was interesting to see the difference in distances travelled mainly due to the route taken between controls 6 and 7. I felt for Graeme T who came back covered in scratches through not realising that there was a main track down to Mounthouse Farm and battled through the thorny hedge rows. Congratulations to David Allison who won and was the only runner to come in under the hour. Second place went to Graeme Tweddle who pipped Vince Connolly by a minute. Well done. Thanks to all who turned up, Bill.

Fairly warm evening with good visibility.  Turn out was low due to a number of people on holiday, injured, down under or preoccupied with that 4 letter word "wo#k". We wanted to keep the checkpoints simple, with handrails, as we knew it would take some effort to climb to the top.  We also wanted a checkpoint as close to Bilsdale transmitter, so people can see the progress.  It appears that we mixed up our recce photographs on checkpoint 5 (BIG mistake!) and everyone congregated looking rather puzzled.  Given the error in our planning it was right to award joint first place to David and Ian. In 3rd place was Mark, swiftly followed by Bob, Bref and Glyn.  Thank you all for your understanding and patience. Wai and Vince.

Driving to Danby it started to rain !! However at Danby it was a very pleasant and dry evening. Turn out was good with nine walkers / runner starting and finishing the course. It seemed that for some the area around Danby was less familiar than other areas closer to Teesside. This perhaps added an extra challenge. First back was David with the others following along at various intervals. Most seemed to have difficulty with point number 1 - how many holes in roof ? The clue perhaps should have said “how many holes in ceiling” although as organisers and having checked out the route a number of times we knew exactly what we were looking for but the clue was obviously confusing - sorry about that. Thanks to all who turned out to take part, Terry and Alan.

Seven hardy walkers / runners headed off from Percy Cross Rigg on a lovely warm day/evening - all returned more or less in one piece and without any complaints. Mark - who ran the course at lunchtime - was the quickest in 1 hr 29 mins. Bref & Bob were second followed home by Bill & Steve. Thanks for all the nice words. David.

This was an almost perfect night, weather-wise for the nine runners and walkers who took part in this autumn Twilight NiteNav from Clay Bank car park. When we put the controls out that morning the weather was pretty much the same, clear and cool. We decided to conceal the controls so that they weren't on display to 'Joe Public' as we've had one or two go missing in the past thus spoiling the event. This time we decided to include an 'Emergency Envelope' containing all the answers in case of that eventuality. This turned out to be extremely useful since we were a little too discrete with control No.4 as it seemed to be illusive to a couple of runners. We stapled the control clue to the back face of the fence corner post so it wasn't on view to passers by but a couple of runners looked everywhere but the back of the post and had to resort to using the emergency clues but we decided to forgo the penalty on this occasion. Everyone seemed to enjoy the route apart from Bob and Glyn who appeared to have the map upside down as they were seen running in the wrong direction!
Congratulations go to David Allison who finished in a blistering 52m mins. Ian Hodgson was second 6 minutes behind and may have won if he hadn't spent so long looking for control No.4. Third was Graeme Tweddle in just over the hour. We look forward to seeing you all, and more, in the upcoming Winter NiteNav series which will start in early November, Bill & Steve.
