First and foremost, can I congratulate everyone for fully complying with the Covid-19 rules, developed by the Elders, ensuring the deadly virus was kept at bay during this event.

Government Guidlines
I had to rehash my postponed April Nitenav course around Baysdale to keep within current government guidelines. This meant solo or double competitors only. This meant the duration had to be extended over a fortnight rather than a couple of hours in one night to allow everyone time to compete. Therefore, the main bridleways and right to roam areas with decent tracks had to be used to avoid farmers, gamekeepers and nesting moorland birds. The use of private woodland was out and self-clips or other “artificial” clues were too risky so clues “on the ground” had to be used. Well that was the plan.
The Course
With these restrictions in mind I chose control locations that hopefully were more easily and quickly accessed by staying on the tracks. ”A runners course!” agreed Dave T afterwards.
I was determined to include the ravine at the north end of Great Hograh beck. A secluded, enchanting, mystical paradise, rarely visited by man. A fairy dell of ancient gnarled trees probably inhabited by Hobgoblins. Anyone see one? I may have.

The only control not on or near a path was the Lamb stone. Now I had to have that as a control. I think it was best approached off the dolomite track when visible from an easterly direction to minimise heather bashing and disturbing nesting birds.

Social Distancing
While Mick G encountered twitchers’ cars hogging the limited parking at the start, a gamekeeper, and a load of bikers, probably very hairy, on Bank Holiday Monday, for the rest of the week several Daynavvers reported not seeing a soul.

The Event
There were a whole variety of routes chosen, some predictable and some very creative, some clockwise and some anticlockwise. While most stuck to the main tracks, some still decided to heather bash their way round, so much for my plan.
So it’s congratulations to David for being our first Daynav winner with a clear four minute margin from Vince, who just pipped Ian for second place by nine seconds. Ian having had bother finding No.9. the now fallen post. It was definitely upright when I set the course out.
Paul led the next group ten minutes or so behind navigating the shortest distance of all, 5.6 miles.

Mark, currently nursing a hamstring injury, did very well walking for most of the course in under two hours. Bill too with a dodgy knee also did well to finish close to the time limit while Terry, walking all the way, wasn’t too far behind either.
Using the tried and trusted Smelly Helly maxim “Tracks are for Namby Pambies!” Steve and Len decided to go “off piste” a couple of times, unfortunately coming to grief in the woods. Ah! The risk of gambling on a short cut in an unfamiliar area. Never catch me doing that!
Finally, Emily and Martyn finished off the event on Sunday with a plucky attempt despite not being fit. I had to mention Martyn because he’s very kindly mentioned us all in his smashing new book ”On Blackamoor”.
Summary
Well this being the first Daynav for us, there were a lot of new challenges to get right, but I’ve got to say it all went quite well. Anyone would think we all knew what we were doing!
So thanks to everyone who gave me feedback, all positive I have to say and thanks to all of you for negotiating a challenging course safely.

Thanks to everyone for taking part -  another great response for the Second DayNav.
Thought the route was fairly straight forward with only clock or anti clockwise choices but found out that Glyn knows a few paths around Spa Wood that I don’t know. Bref,  heading clockwise for 7, took the Cleveland Way to Charltons went to the bridge and then returned the same way to Charltons. (A bit further but less climbing and no tricky descent).
Most found all the clues but Wall End (5) Red electricians tape wrapped around a small stone (turned Red and white by the sun?) Placed on top of the wall – Two could not locate it and a third ran straight past it.
White tape around a tree branch over head height (8) not found by three people.
Everybody found the gate sign (4) but not all choose FOOTPATH as the answer - strange that.
Lots of positive responses, thanks, Terry.

When I planned the course I had the intention of making the route uncomplicated with no hidden or 'difficult to find' controls and, where possible, no tapes or markers. All were either on or very close to main paths and tracks. It was, therefore, a very 'runnable' course but the distance was such that walkers would be able to complete the course within 2 hours, which most managed to achieve. It looks as though, with only a couple of exceptions, the weather was kind, i.e. dry(ish) for most of the week. None of the clues seemed to cause any problems and everyone managed to find them. Unfortunately we had a couple of casualties - Emily Hesse, unfortunately managed to strain her calf and so she and Martyn had to cut short, as did Vince Connolly who had a minor injury from the previous weekend. Since his injury was improving through the week he thought he'd be OK but, unfortunately not. Sorry guys. Hope you recover soon. It proved to be definitely a 'runners' course as Ian Hodgson, also carrying a slight injury, blitzed round in under 65 minutes. In second place, just under a minute slower, was Graeme Tweddle on 'tired' legs.......... Third was David Allison only a few seconds behind Graeme's time. Everyone who replied with their results appeared to really enjoy the course. Great to see so many competitors taking part in the series, so far. We've averaged 19. Thanks everyone for taking part and for the positive comments. It makes it all worthwhile planning a DayNav, Bill.

Congratulations to Trevor who completed the course just 39 seconds faster than Graeme, with Wai coming third despite taking pictures of all the controls (and himself) on the way round.
When walking the Cleveland Way a few weeks ago I thought that the open moors above Kepwick looked really runnable and ideal for a DayNav. Also, the format of individual start times meant there were no concerns over parking. Three people decided to get to the start from Square Corner, adding a further 3 miles each way to their walk/run.
As mentioned on WhatsApp, control no.4 was designed to get people deciding whether they wanted to take a direct line to/from control 7 - and getting their legs shredded, or take a longer but easier route through the well established forest (i.e. Bob) or stick to the forest tracks (to maximise the time being attacked by flies!).
Control no.2 proved a challenge to a few people. The key to finding that control was to use the wall which was close to the scree to locate yourself, David.

Congratulation to GraemeTweddle on the best time for the Kirby DayNav in a time of 1 hour 10 minutes 29 seconds, closely followed by David Allison who was chased by cows between CP 1 and 2 and was some one and a half minutes slower. If only the cows had chased him a bit earlier. Wai was third some 3 minutes behind David. Next was Trevor, less than minute after Wai and only another minute behind was Vince. Conditions may have played a part in the results with Trevor going early in the week when it was hot and humid and Graeme, David and Wai later with lower temperatures and damp conditions. When Steve and I laid out the course we thought most people would do it anticlockwise which turned out to be true and we considered it would be a runners rather than walkers course. A key to success was taking the lower but longer north of the Cleveland Way between CP6 and CP7 and not following the CW. Commiserations to Bob Howe who, in wet conditions, slipped and fell on the footbridge just north of CP10 and wondered why CP10 was included; it was to stop people walking/running along the road which some motor cyclists seem to think is akin to Isle of Man TT circuit. Very few people seemed to have problems with finding the controls, and with the dry conditions the track through the forest between CP7 and CP8 was not too bad. The main grumble was the nettle stings and insect bites collected, Len & Steve.

Thanks everyone for turning out for the Day Nav and all the comments made it worthwhile. I was trying to find somewhere a bit different where you couldn't just stick the map away between checkpoints, as we are all getting so familiar with a lot of the moors. I knew a few would have fun navigating the field paths as I know I did as I was exploring this area and it wasn't obvious on the ground where the footpath went as the sheep don't always follow the right of way. The tricky bit, I thought was the Far House to Hagg House Farm which was as the map but not so obvious on the ground. Dave A flew roundand hardly put a foot wrong, closely followed by Graeme, unfortunately spending a bit of time locating the animal trap. This seemed to be the one that caught the majority of people out, in hindsight I maybe should have added a bit more to the description but when you are planning it, it seems obvious that it's the boundary drystone wall where it joins what used to be a building of some sort, there was even a benchmark on the building which I thought would be too hard to locate. The rest of the controls were on the whole simpler to locate. It was amusing to hear a few folk got dragged through the ford, from the start to checkpoint 3, as just downstream from the ford was a footbridge. I nearly did the same until my wife asked why not use the footbridge! What footbridge? Oh, that one down there. I pretended I knew about it and was just wanting her to get her feet wet. It was pretty close between the next few positions with Trev coming in third closely followed by Paul H, Wai and Mark. There wasn't much separating Mick G from Dave T and Caroline, Alan B must have his new hips well and truly broken in as he wasn't far behind with Bill and Bob, Glyn and Terry next and finally Steve and Len who must have had a picnic on the way round. Thanks for the feedback and it gave a few talking points, Ian.
