Thirteen hardy souls turned up on a fine spring evening to
tackle my challenging Nitenav course. As most Smellys are
unfamiliar with Silton Forest I went for a tough route with
a lot of climb but with fairly straightforward controls with
only the ruin and CP8 being a bit technical to find.
So well done to Ian for winning in a very impressive fast
time of 1hour 17 minutes but hard luck for David who took
only 2 minutes longer but missed CP8, being confused by the
semi permanent school orienteering control further down the
stream.
Well done also to Bill who came an excellent second pipping
Mark by nearly a minute. Looking at Strava, Mark seemed to
have lost time veering off the track to CP3.
The early 5 o’clock start with an 8:30 closing time proved
popular and afterwards I was pleased everyone seemed to have
enjoyed the course, including those who unluckily missed
some of the controls. Even wounded Bob got a chance to test
his new long socks against the brambles! Bref. |

Seven took the challenge and of those four managed to find
all nine controls (that I had intentionally made a 'little'
difficult to find) as the route was relatively easy - we had
been at the same location last Tuesday night. Despite that
David Allison shot round the 6.4 mile route in 66 minutes,
having found all the clues, to enable him to complete the
quiz I gave at the end (each of the 9 controls had a number
to record and when they were transposed to the relating
letter of the alphabet the word 'DANDELION' was spelt out -
lots of them about a moment). One runner couldn't find No.7
(under the viaduct) perhaps because it wasn't hidden like
the rest! Some, I gather, got stung hunting for No.8, the
ford, but with my aversion to nettles and bramble I wouldn't
have ventured there! Control No.9, the gate to 'nowhere',
two runners failed to find this - the RoW across this
particular field is a right angle but most people usually
take the diagonal and didn't see the gate.
The overall consencus was a nice route on a warm sunny
evening but control locations could have been easier to
find, but then what would we have talked about in the pub
afterwards. Thanks for taking part, Terry. |

Despite the forecast the weather (rain & wind) wasn't quite
as bad as expected, just a bit showery and a little breezy.
The course was set mainly around Hutton & Guisborough Woods
with several urban controls thrown in to create a definite
circular course. Most managed to locate all the controls,
that they went for with the exception of Mick G who,
unfortunately didn't manage to locate the lamp post at the
end of Badsworth close - Terry C took the wise decision to
run down Ledbury way following the street name plates and
once Badsworth Close was found he was able to locate the
correct lamp post aty the other end. Len Small avoided the
farthest out controls due to injury and Paul & Ange just
wanted to walk with the dogs 'bagging' the nearer ones.
Judging by the response and the post race course analysis
everyone seemed to enjoy the event.
Thanks to all of you who turned up, despite the forecast.
Hope to see you all at the next NiteNav which is on Tuesday
2nd July and will be from Ingleby Cross, organised by Ian
Hodgson, Bill & Steve. |

It was a lovely evening last night and what looked like a
long course turned out to be about right with everyone
having a very quick run round. I'd taped a few areas as the
paths aren't as the map and a lot of new tracks have been
put in for the breeding of pheasants. Dave A. blasted round
in 1:12 followed by Bob Mitchell and then it was very close
with Mark beating the 'in form' Dave T. by just 3 minutes.
Next were Bref and Bob who tried to straight line their
route choice as much as they could and out foxed Dave T with
some cunning lines on the run in from the last checkpoint.
There were a few of the checkpoints that caused some time
loss which were the small quarry at checkpoint 4 looking for
the boot laces hanging from the tree, the wall corner
looking for the stone gatepost and most finding a wooden
gatepost which I hadn't seen and the rock pillar which was
difficult to map as the paths are close together between
crags and wall. There was only one direction round with 1
first and 13 last as 13 has nothing to guide you in from the
bottom, but coming down you can see the forest tracks. To
find checkpoint 6, I think the best approach is to follow
the right of way and not direct across the fields.
I've left the canes and tapes out if anyone wants to have a
look round, I'll collect them in next week some time as they
are quite hidden away, Ian |

With a forecast of perfect weather I wanted to give walkers
and runners a full two hours out. Walkers were advised to
tackle the first 8 checkpoints at a course length of 6
miles. Runners were advised that the four higher checkpoints
would add a further two miles. Dave Allison came close to
running the perfect course with excellent route choice and
spot-on navigation. Unfortunately he didn’t turn his map
over and forgot about checkpoints 11 and 12 until he had run
half a mile away from them, otherwise his performance would
have been even more impressive. I also wanted everyone back
within two hours. As per the website rules and the practice
of OMM style score events runners were advised that there
would be a 5 point penalty for each minute over two hours.
This is to be fair to the organisers with a long wait for
runners to return and to create a margin for safety in case
anyone turns an ankle or worse out on the course.
Thanks to Terry for his help with course planning and
recording times and scores on the night, to Bill for
providing additional maps, and to all who turned out on the
night, Keith. |

I tried to plan a route that would have lots of good running
and nice sea views and not be too technical. Plus a nice
detour onto the pier and up Cat Nab. Based on the comments
in the pub afterwards the course seemed to be enjoyed by all
13 participants.
Congratulations to Mark who was fastest, but commiserations
to Wai who he beat by only 3 seconds. Bob Mitch was third -
45 seconds behind Wai, David.
Final Series Position: Congratulations, once again, to
series winner David Allison. Runner-up is Ian Hodgson and in
third place is Mark Edwards. Well done guys. A big thank you
to all the organisers for putting on somne very interesting
and challenging courses and a thank you all who were able to
turn up and compete.
I hope to see you all at the Twilight NiteNav on Tuesday
24th September, details to follow, Bill P. |

Well, what a horrible day, weather-wise. Fortunately I had
the good sense to put the controls the previous evening.
Steve had a trot round the course earlier in the day and had
said that after an initial downpour it faired up a little.
First off, braving the rain, were Len and Terry,
disappearing into the mist and low cloud, closely followed
by Bob and then Mick Garratt.
The course was designed in a 5(ish) mile circular with the
controls far enough away from the main tracks to be out of
site yet straightforward to locate. A little later saw Ian H
and David A turn up to brave the elements and shortly after
the final runner Mark E. The thick cloud and mist continued
but the rain had given way to a fine mizzle and soon after
Mark, the final runner, had set off the mist cleared.
Nobody seemed to have any difficulties in locating all the
controll and first back, in a little over 49 minutes was
winner Ian Hodgson closely followed by second place David
Allison. Third place went to last man out and back Mark
Edwards taking just over the hour.
Everyone said that they had enjoyed the route and said it
was a good course.
Thanks to everyone for turning out, despite the bad weather,
and hope to see you all on the winter series NiteNavs, Bill
& Steve. |
