Despite the rain a dozen hardy Smellys turned up to take on my NiteNav at Hutton Rudby last night. Apologies to all for the couple of checkpoints that I incorrectly marked on the map, in particular cp21, which should have been on the next stream west of where I placed the circle. Also some of the letters on the yellow tapes I used for some of the controls were rendered unreadable by the rain. Nevertheless, everyone seemed to cope judging by the comments to me afterwards. As for the course, everyone seemed to enjoy the lovely countryside around Hutton Rudby, with lots of woodland anemones, primroses and bluebells on show. Shame the sun wasn’t shining. Congratulations to David for finding all the controls, bar cp21, to finish 1st ahead of Mark in second place and Vince in third. Bad luck for Ian who ran the full 8 mile course in the fastest time but failed to find a couple of controls including falling for the trap I laid with the Catholic church at Crathorne being the control and not the more prominent C of E church nearby. The speed walkers also did well completing most of the course in just over 2 hours.

Hi folks, it was really rewarding to have 21 runners turn out on what was probably one of the best evenings of the summer, weather wise. I'd attempted to set out an interesting course in this fairly restricted space without any road crossings, hence the 19 controls at fairly close intervals and a short race. Firstly I should apologise for the wrong positioning of number 15, I picked the correct seat, but then marked the wrong one on the map. I must admit it was quite amusing watching folks charging around the area above the finish, I wasn't alone in chuckling. The abandoned Bike at number 10 was the subject of some discussion too, although I maintain it was correct I'm sure everyone has their own view and it did prompt a lively post mortem at the sunny finish. Bonus points should go to those who spotted my "deliberate" mistake on bird identification at 16 - they were Woodpeckers and an extra thanks to Vince for pointing out my grammatical error on 11 & 13 - which should have read "whose" - we have our standards 😊. All in all, everyone seemed to have a good race round and enjoyed the lovely weather and surroundings. Thanks for coming, Bob.

The course was set up in order to give the runners a 7-ish miles run out and compact enough for the walkers to be able to complete it in the 2-hour time limit, which I think was achieved. There were also several route choices due to a couple of control that needed a bit of 'thinking about', route-wise. Judging by the usual post event post-mortem, in the bar, it soon became obvious that there were many different routes used so that also worked. The route was also designed to have a mixture of trails, tracks, footpaths and a fair bit of tarmac (sorry Ian), as well as a fair few urban controls. The route/area was definitely new to all the competitors and there were also a couple of new footpaths (RoWs) to all (and initially to me). I was surprised to see a few make use of the Whitby Lane housing estate in order to either go to CP19 or back from there - I hadn't even considered that. What I hadn't, and perhaps should have, was that a couple of runners, who shall remain nameless, managed a major shortcut through Foxdale Farm, luckily, without being challenged, probably saving half a mile! We felt a little sorry for Dave Thompson who, after going well, managed to twist his ankle badly trying to leap over some nettles but managed to hobble around an 'bag' a few more controls but in then had to give in to pain. Anyway judging by the post run comments everyone seemed to enjoy the course and, as far as I can remember, the first with a lot of urban controls (other than CLOK events). The last two runners to start were Ian and David and agreed to go in opposite directions to see which was the better route. It was David A who came in first (of the two) in just under 1:03 admitting that he could have reduced this by a couple of minutes due to errors and Ian H come in around 3 minutes later, so which was the better route. Only Strava will tell....... In third place (and first back) was Mark Edwards. Thanks for all who turned up and Steve and I hope you had a good night, Bill & Steve.

Thank you to everyone who  turned out on a lovely summers evening  for the NiteNav at Bowesfield Wetlands in Stockton when I know some would rather be on the moor. The overall winner in just under 55 minutes for the 6 mile course was Dave Allison, I was expecting a winning time close to 60 minutes, but slightly more rather than less . Second was Ian Hodgson some 15 minutes slower and then Wai pipping Mark by 5 seconds for third place in 1 hour 20 minutes 10 seconds. Credit must be given to John Wood who was spotted running a few times and got round in 1 hour 58 minutes. In laying out the course Terry and I wanted to show people some of the sites in the area that had not been used in the early NiteNav which was in the dark, however we can not claim credit for  the site seen by Steve and Glyn which they chose to observe and added a few minutes to their time, also the Morris and Clog dancers at the pub afterwards were somewhat of a surprise. I must apologise to Keith and Max for somehow missing to  tell them that the shading on the door at control point number 10 gave it a black rather than brown appearance. Terry who had checked the course on the Monday went out on Tuesday morning and was amazed at some of the changes to paths caused by the thunderstorms on Monday night which had flattened vegetation rendering some paths invisible, and dislodged a couple of small bridges.

Thanks everyone for still turning up, even after looking at the map.
I'm not sure how much difference it made to everyone getting the map in advance to have a study but it gave a bit of bedtime reading. There was a bit of route choice and whether to go low or high first generally the high route seemed the most popular.
Apologies for the poor little cane which was the same height as the marsh grass and had black tape on which made it impossible to see for some, even though it was an obvious spring and I think everyone went straight to it as it had a good flow of water spouting from it. The checkpoint to cause the most problems was checkpoint 9 (east side of stream, edge of landslide, colour of string round top of tree) It was reasonably simple from above, I'd put an arrow in the mud and a stone marking access between the bracken onto the scree, if you had followed the top path. A few tried getting to this from below, a route I had never tried out and it turned out to be quite dense trees and fallen trees, quite a battle a few of you had. This seemed to be the decider for the fastest round and that went to Trevor, as he came in from the top and Dave Allison was battling from below. Well done Trevor, Cheers, Ian

Hopefully everyone enjoyed their run around what was a new area for most people. Coatham Woods is not huge, but has a lot more runnable areas than on the OS map, so I added as many as I could to the map to make it more representative whilst trying not to go for information overload.
Congratulations to Mark Edwards who got round in 79 mins, just over 8 mins faster than Ian Hodgson, who beat Paul Haydon into third by less than 3 mins, David.
Hope to see you all at the Twilight NiteNav which will now be on Tuesday 25th September and will be from Clay Bank.
