I set a hard technical course for my NiteNav this year based on a recent CLOK event in the same area. To help competitors I enhanced the OS map adding paths and features and I used some controls previously used by CLOK in 2014 (2, 6, 7 & 13) and 2017 (8,9 & 14) First home by a long way was Ian who on finishing complained the course was too short and promptly went back out for another run! Well done Ian. Second in was a flustered Trevor who reckoned his route choice could have been a lot better. Third in was David Alison chuntering about the accuracy of some of the controls, like trying to find needle in a haystack! Sorry Dave I tried my best. A good fourth was Bill who like Ian took the shortest route (4.6 miles). After that everyone either missed a control(s) or went over time. Unlucky Dave T went half way round before realising the middle of his compass had dropped out. So the general consencus afterwards was that the course was tough but challenging with CP7 causing the most difficulty. Perhaps I should have added to the description that the pit had a fully grown tree in it! Thanks to Steve and Bob for testing out the course beforehand and Keith for collecting the controls in - Bref

The weather threatened to be fairly stormy earlier on in the day but ended up being fine and clear. Many apologies again for not knowing that the 28 day exclusion had come down the day before on the lower flanks of the moor but not the higher flanks. This affected some of the runners in the encounter with the ‘moorland management’. Many apologies again for this. This was a fairly complex area that is a hidden gem of small valleys like Bella Dale and features such as Temple Beeld and the Long Stone. The Railway cutting was part of the old Paddy Waddell railway that we wanted to take you on as we have discussed it on previous runs out. We thought it was possible to get round in two hours and Dave Allison managed this with 10 mins to spare having bagged all the controls. Ian Hodgson also got all but one but accrued penalties. Even though his run had an ‘intervention’ Keith also did well but Bref and Dave and Angus also had great runs out in this unusual set of moors: Black Dike, Roxby and Easington High Moor. We hope you enjoyed even with the difficulties you may have encountered, Martyn and Mick.

The weather was really kind to us - sunny and warm, but not too hot. The course had been set out roughly in a complete circle with only one or two to think about. Most people seemed to tackle the route clockwise with only the odd one or two going ACW. Most of the controls were either on or just off main tracks with three of them on mountain bike trails, which were new to most. Because I'd blown the map up to A3 the course looked absolutely huge, actually only 7.4 miles, but I was convinced that many would be back well inside the time limit. First back was Ian Hodgson, sweating profusely, whom we thought would be the fastest around the route (it was a very runnable course) only to see 'that man again', David Allison galloping across the field to visit his last control at Blue Lake and coming in 6 minutes quicker! In third place, ten minutes behind was Mick Garratt, who put me right with some of the boundary stone letters - thanks Mick. Len and Terry came in, with time to spare, missing the last control at blue lake, to which we persuaded them to go for it, which they did, just managing to beat the time limit - well done guys. I thought we might have had a few more but was told that there were some away - thanks for the email, Keith - you missed a lovely night.
Bref only had one complaint and that was the fact that he had no complaints (praise indeed). Thanks for all the compliments and hope you all enjoyed the course, Bill & Steve

A return to Coatham Sands 3 years after my previous NiteNav for a long run/walk along the beach, around the Gare and through the dunes and long grass. Hopefully after everyone's legs stop stinging and with hindsight you all enjoyed a great area for exploration with lots of paths and trods and other features - such as a swivel chair overlooking the mouth of the Tees and part of a number plate on a boulder in the middle of a pond. Only 3 people got to all the controls. Congratulations to Keith who got back with 3 mins to spare. He was closely followed by Emily and Martyn who were a couple of mins over the time (probably due to Martyn slowing them down!). Apologies to all who had to fight their way into control No. 13. There was a good path in from the road, but it was difficult to find and with hindsight I should have dropped that control.
Sorry Bref - hopefully the cheap beer (only £2.00!) partially made up for it, David.
The next NiteNav is on 1st August at Kirkby, planned by Trevor Symonds. See you there.

During an unsettled week weather wise we manage to avoid the heavy rain, well except Woody who returned looking like a drowned rat. When putting the course together I wanted to make it possible for everybody to visit all the controls within the time limit with a winning time of one hour. This worked well with most of the runners finishing just over the hour and everybody else getting around the whole course well within the time limits. Well done to Dave who ran around the course in 53 minutes which included a full tour of the pub looking for me, don't know why he thought I would be in the pub..........
Thank you all for the positive comments, Trevor.

I'd been round the course on Sunday and found a few of the checkpoints I'd hoped to use didn't exist on the ground, I was disappointed Raindrip Well was just a bog, I was hoping for a small pond, so decided it wasn't worth using. I'd kept the number of checkpoints low to just 8 and hoped there'd be a bit of route choice with the option to go direct and hope for sheep trods or go the longer routes and stay on reasonably worn paths. There was a lot of heather bashing for the straight line routes and minimal bracken. I was getting a bit concerned when time was getting on and nobody was back, I thought I'd made the route too challenging but first Graham appeared from one direction and I thought he'd managed to beat Dave but Dave soon ran in from the other direction, proving there were no advantages to going round clockwise or anticlockwise. As usual Dave was first closely followed by Graham, then Mark, Paul and Mick. Everyone managed to get in within the 2 hours which doesn't happen very often. I think most people enjoyed it but as is expected by all the organisers 'constructive criticism' from the competitors of how you should have done it. I agree the clues were long winded but I was only trying to make locating the checkpoint simple. Hopefully most people managed to see a few areas they hadn't been to before.
Have you all checked for ticks, I managed to pick one up on Sunday, Ian.

The Twilight NiteNav date was changed so we could combine this with the end of season nosebag so after the NiteNav we all had pie, peas and chips at the Dudley. We had a near record turnout of 20 for the NiteNav and 22 for the meal. Steve planned the route and I recce'd it and it was designed to give a large (6 miles) circular route with a few route choices. It took Steve and I 2 hours to walk/jog round the course when we put out the controls. We both thought as this was a 'runners' course that the first home would be a toss up between David Allison and Ian Hodgson in, probably, around 1:15. First out, and back was Paul Haydon who came back in at 6:49pm. It was more than 15 minutes before the second finisher, Trevor Symonds, arrived back in, then, 2nd place. 'Old hand' Bob Mitchell manage to knock Paul back into second place but 'that man' did it once again following Bob back one minute later. Yes, David Allison romped home in 1:09:33, beating Bob and knocking Paul into 3rd. Since Ian Hodgson went out a couple of minutes after David we that it would be very close but after a slip up, or two, Ian only managed 4th.

I think that most enjoyed the route and certainly the food afterwards.

Thanks to everyone for turning out and hope to see most of you on the winter series NiteNavs, Bill & Steve.
