To infinity and beyond! Part 2. Our second visit to the Sun Inn (It's 3 years since the our last visit!) for a run around five of the bridges on the River Tees and another chance to sample the BEST pint of Bass in the world! So 10 hardy souls turned up on an evening of foul weather having to contend with constant rain and a biting cold easterly wind. Local knowledge and good form saw Dave Allison comfortably home first. There's a surprise! Second place however was a close run thing with Mark pipping Ian by only a minute, closely followed by Keith, again only a minute. Unfortunately Ian missed one control and and therefore wasn't in third place overall. However, there was bad luck on Bob for aggravating his hamstring halfway round. Afterwards, everyone was very complementary about the course and the street 'O' map I used with only CP8, the railway traffic signal, turning out to be a bit tricky for some. Not used to being complimented after one of my events, I must be losing my touch! Thanks to John Wood and Martyn Hudson for helping me on the night. -  Bref

Checking back through previous year's results this was one of the largest assembly of runners and walkers we've seen so I wonder if it was the lure of pie, peas & chips? We had a lovely warm night with perfect conditions, if not a little hard under foot (better than mud & clag), with our 'athletes' covering an area almost as far south as Bankfoot cottages to Battersby & Coleson Banks to the North and the fields in between. Nobody, other than Bref & Glyn seemed too eager to go as I think most took a fair time to study the map and try to work out the optimum route. Steve & I had a short walk around the village not expecting anyone quite so soon. We hadn't long returned to the car park when Ian Hodgson came galloping back in an astounding time of only 1:02:05, nearly 5 minutes ahead of David Allison who just pipped an eagerly waiting Vince Connolly by just over a minute. I must apologise for a minor error on the map where I had controls 5 & 6 the wrong way round but since the descriptions and locations were fairly clear it wasn't too difficult to work out. This was due to a last minute change of route due to VERY irate cows with their calves that I experienced the previous night when I did a last minute recce (I've never been so scared...). Everyone appeared to enjoy the NiteNav and this was only surpassed by some delicious mince pie, mushy peas & home made chips and beautiful refreshing Wadworth Boundary seasonal ale (apparently only available throughout May) mmm. Thanks to all who came along and for all your kind comments. The next NiteNav will be on 7th June from Square Corner, courtesy of Martyn Hudson. See you there, Bill & Steve.

Good turnout of 14 participants in great weather. It threatened thunderstorms but they didn’t materialise. I designed the route carefully to take on board open access areas, footpaths and a mix of open moor, forestry, and the mixed bilberry, wood and heather waste above the Siltons. It was designed to be extremely challenging not for the complexity of the controls but of route choice and traverse over rough ground. The technical difficulty of control 7 (sheepfold) did prove challenging with even expert orienteers like Dave Allison heading far to the south of it. Nine Stones proved as controversial as always. The routes up from Dale Head farm also offered a range of opportunities. I suspected that even though it was theoretically possible to bag all controls within the two hours I didn’t think it very likely. I was proved wrong with Dave getting round completely with 2 minutes to spare. Outstanding. I suspected that the route might favour Ian Hodgson as he likes this kind of terrain but he came in over time and without a last control. Bref had an epic run round but being 41 minutes outside of the time limit has accrued a rather large number of penalty points. Ken Wilson is supposed to have given up running but the competition must have got too much as he was sprinting in at the end with Len and Ian. Steve also bagged a good few after saying he was going out for an idle wander. Wai turned up at the finish with 22 mins to spare and agonised whether to go and bag the Oakdale bridge control. He did and after a sharp sprint back up got back with zero minutes to spare. Well done and thanks for all the positive comments, Martyn

Starting from the village of Welbury, opposite the Duke of Wellington, and covered the surrounding countryside. Thanks to everyone for turning up on a very wet evening at a new area with not many contours. The results were a Hodgson lockout with Tom really showing Ian 'Who's the Daddy' with a run over 10 minutes ahead of everyone else. I planned the route in April and had not been back to the area until Monday evening for a final check. Unfortunately a number of footpaths had completely disappeared or were full of nettles, so I had to have a major re-plan with more road and track than original envisaged. Thanks for all the nice comments and the opportunity to visit a good new pub, David.
The next NiteNav is on 26th July at Gribdale, courtesy of Wai. See you all there.

For those who didn’t turn up or missed check point 1 you missed the WORLD PREMIERE unveiling of the new Smelly Helly flag (well it was the only thing I could think of as a check point)! A tremendous round by Mr Dave “Invincible” Allison, who came in 13 minutes in front of Ian Hodgson and closely followed by Mick Garratt. Things could have been so different had young Hodgson not been so honest and revealed finding a different shaft to the one on the map (Tom - always attend the pub session afterwards if you want to fight your corner against the Elders!). Most check points were known to runners and walkers, so I placed the emphasis on route choice and it didn’t disappoint. It was good to see the creative side of our group going in all directions. Keith Wilson was so focused on his map reading and running he managed to run pass my car at the finish and couldn’t understand why the two unsuspecting folks in the next car wouldn’t give him his finish time? Many of the group enjoyed thrashing in the over grown bracken, so much so that Bill spent 30 minutes at check point 6 (have a look at his Strava). Big thank you to Julie and Claire for finding Bref's expensive compass. I have placed on Ebay starting at £30. Glad you all enjoyed the night out. See you on the 16th August for the 6th and final NiteNav of the summer season. Location TBC (Stands for Ian Hodgson’s New House I think), Wai.

It was a good turnout for holiday time and the evening was sunny and warm with the paths dry and fast running.  My plan for having all the checkpoints was to give the walkers (who turn into runners on NiteNavs) a bit more interest with more checkpoints to be had. I was hoping to lead the runners out onto the longer circuit to get the high scoring points but with a chance of running out of time and not having enough time to get the checkpoints closer to home and giving the possibility of the shrewder walkers to get more points for less distance.  The plan worked reasonably well giving the runners a good blast out and the walkers plenty of choice to fill their two hours to bag as many point as they could. Steve and Glyn had a tremendous run out and I've never seen them sweat as much. Bob and Bref decided to go long and did really well to get as many checkpoints as they did. Wai had a real good run and the path out round Thimbleby and back through to Oak dale was a first time for him so he was having to navigate all the way not like many of you who know the path through there. Dave Allison as usual stormed round and would have got all the checkpoints if it was not for there being a direct line through from the youth hostel to Red Briers. The lost time meant he had nothing left for checkpoint 17. He was only two minutes late so he still managed to get the most points. Wai was second and Mark third who also picked up a few penalty points, which didn't effect the overall results. Keith had a good run round with a carefully planned route to get as many points as he could without doing the long route out to Thimbleby. Ian Mac kept Len on the right tracks to get themselves a good number of checkpoints as well and well done to Martyn who's not at the peak of his fitness at the moment with him dedicating most of his time to writing books, drinking and a bit of eating.  My apologies for the telegraph pole which I had the wrong number on and was also informed it wasn't a telegraph pole but a power line. Poor Ged went down all the power lines into the bracken counting them, losing a lot of time which he could have used to collect more points. Thanks for all turning up and you all seemed to get your money's worth with the majority being out for close to 2 hours, Cheers, Ian.
Congratulations to the ‘new’ NiteNav champion David Allison for the 5th time! Runner-up was, last year's winner, Ian Hodgson followed by Mark Edwards in 3rd place. Don't forget the Twilight NiteNav on 27th September, venue TBC. See you there, wherever it is...........

Well, I wasn’t expecting that, in the words of Jamie Lawson! When Steve and I put the controls out we thought that the only 'difficult' control to find might have been No.5 (Plinths), after finding a 'typo' error on control No.4 clue card, but how wrong can you be...... After setting everyone off Steve and I walked down to retrieve control No.1 from under the bridge and by the time we returned we thought that it wouldn't be long before the first runner returned as putting the controls out took only just over an hour. However, we began to worry when it got to about 7:10pm thinking that either the runners were having difficulty in locating one (or more) of the controls or worse, a control had gone missing. Both turned out to be true as control No.4, at the pond outlet, appeared to have been removed making 'difficult' (impossible) to find. Most people decided to just go for a longer run whilst three of our tenacious runners decided to try some of the other circles marked on the map and came up trumps finding No.6 and then were able to find No.7 from this - well done 'super sleuths', making them the top three finishers. As an update Steve contacted me to say that he had been out to retrieve the controls and that everyone must have been in the correct location for No.4 and was, indeed, missing and not only that but No.6 was also missing but this must have been the following day as three of the runners found it.
The controls were: -
1. Under the bridge - GR567 103
2. Ruined Building - GR579 104
3. Path/Stream Junction - GR576 108
4. Pond Outlet - GR581 113
5. Concrete Plinths - 574 115
6. Winding Engine Base - 572 118
7. Railway Bridge - 567 118
