What a night! I don't know where to start. Everyone seemed to have an experience to share. Bob gave Wai a masterclass in navigation. Paul delivered an impressive performance on slicks. Dave A, Ian, Graeme, and Vince proved that the spirit of adventure is still 'alive and kicking' by exploring and, in some cases, executing off-piste shortcuts. Last but not least, Mick P took his new hip around the inner loop.
Well done, everyone.
It was almost 25 years to the day when I entered my very first NiteNav from that very same car park. Back then, it was organised by a mad group from the Mandale Harriers. We didn't get large scale printed maps. Just the grid references and a description which we had to plot on our own maps. The best torch available was a Petzl Zoom. Suffice to say, I definitely had an adventure. The good old days.
Finally, a big thank you to my beautiful assistant Caroline, who plied me with a cold bacon sandwich and Cola along with doing the hard yacker of time keeper. I hope you all appreciated what we thought was a very original and interesting method of controls.
Well done to winner Dave Allison then Graeme Tweddle in 2nd place and followed by 3rd place Paul Haydon.
Thank you all for turning out last night. The banter afterwards made it very rewarding, Dave & Caroline.

The evening turned out to be dry which was good after the weather during the day setting it out. The setting out of the controls without any public interfering with them was the challenge and keeping them on reasonable handrails. Everyone seemed to enjoy the course and found the controls they were going for. The aim was to give a bit of route choice which seemed to go well. Dave A flew round as expected taking some direct routes, a good job it was dark! Mark (cruiser weight) came in second also getting all 8 controls followed Vince. For the walkers there were 5 controls all local to Cod Beck and the forest area without having to climb the moor up towards the edge of Arncliffe woods. Mick, Bob and Steve scooped these up whilst Paul and Alfie went for the more challenging 3 controls first then picked up 2 round Cod Beck. Well done to everyone and thanks for the compliments, Ian.

Seven people and two dogs ventured out from Lordstones on a dry and mild Autumn evening. I put 3 controls furthest away from the start for the runners and designed a shorter loop for the walkers and offered a few route choices. As ever someone always takes a route that you had not even thought of - in this case Vince. Ian took the most direct route across Bilsdale West Moor and it paid off a he came home 7 minutes ahead of Vince.

It was really great to have so much positive feedback from my NiteNav, always makes the effort worthwhile. The weather was spot on with a nice clear crisp evening which tempted some to stay out as long as possible, well done to Steve and Bill for getting around the full route when they set off with no intention of doing all the controls. There appeared to be some puzzling to how to tackle the course to get the most efficient route. This meant that runners and walkers were heading off in various directions at the start. Incorporating number 8 into the route seemed problematic for some.
Well done to Dave A for breaking the hour, all be it by 1 second. Thanks to you all. Cheers, Trevor.

Massive Pat on the back to the 13 hardy souls who ventured out from Gribdale into the Mizzle for tonight’s NightNav.The weather earlier was a vast  improvement on two weeks ago when I abandoned putting out the controls but the mist and rain came along to bite us on the backside. Well done Ian Hodgson on his win. Some interesting routes taken but everybody got back safe, sound and very wet, then back to the Royal Oak to mull over what could have been, 🍻🏃‍♂️🌧️. Thanks again everybody, Mark.

Well done to all thirteen Smellys who took part in my Nitenav this evening. It was my bad weather course starting just outside the village instead of Lordstones due to the wintry weather at the time of the original date. Anyway, it gave me the chance to use paths that were new or unfamiliar to most along with some serious climbing for those taking in the full route. The weather was perfect tonight with a full moon and the early start gave everyone a bit of daylight to help. However, some overshot CP2 as reflectives don’t work in broad daylight. Congratulations to Ian, who pipped second place David and third place Vince. In fact well done to Mark, Graeme and Paul who also completed the full course involving 1,500 feet of climb. I took a leaf out of Dave T’s book and allowed the over seventies to skip the two summits CP5 & 6 which unsurprisingly seemed to go down well, Bref.

The course route had been devised by Steve and then 'fine-tuned' by me. We were extremely fortunate with the weather forecast for this week as previous weeks had been wet, windy and very cold. Tonight, was gloriously sunny and much warmer (15ºC). We had an fantastic turnout with 14 keen and eager runners and walkers raring to go. After putting the controls out Steve and I were trying to predict the winning time. Given that the course length was around 4 miles and with 7 controls to find, we both predicted around 45 to 50 minute winning time - Spot on! David Allison stormed in, also first runner back, in 49 minutes dead, over 25 minutes before anyone else arrived back. Fantastic stuff. Well done David. The next runners back were Vince, closely followed by Mark, but we had to wait another 10 minutes, or so, to find out if Vince would be in second place, but, the last runner out was Ian H and, was the only other runner to break the hour, and so was second in a time of just over 57 minutes pushing Vince into 3rd place with Mark finishing 4th. There was only one small(ish) incident whereby Len, Ken & Mick, thinking they had completed the course, saying that the information card on the Cairn control was missing and hence, thought that it was the last control, only to be told by Dave T that he had secured the loose card under stone and that there were two more controls after that! Oh dear, never mind, after all they did confess to having had a great night out!
What a fantastic response Steve and I received afterwards regarding the course. Everyone said that it had been a great route - Thanks guys, this makes it all worthwhile.
Steve and I would like to thank everyone for the very positive feedback and hope to see you all back for the summer NiteNav series, Bill & Steve.
