Thanks to everyone who took part at Thimbleby and survived the cows, dogs, horses, gamekeeper, lost shoes, broken glasses, head injuries, brambles, and mud!  I chose the area as somewhere perhaps not too frequently visited for SH activities.  Evening weather was good but despite the recent dry conditions, the area remained surprisingly muddy and slippery in places.  The plan was to provide a course with lots to think about in terms of route choices, especially the best way to approach control 6, whilst keeping controls close to main paths and avoiding the worst of the thick undergrowth. I was impressed by the ambition of those who attempted direct routes between any of 4, 5, 6, 7 but I’m really not sure it was worth hacking through vs. the longer path routes around. I made quite a few map corrections but the OS map doesn’t really do justice to the way some of the path junctions are set out and I think that contributed to a few difficulties for some at control 8 – the field and fence corner was the key thing to rely on. I measured and timed the expected routes quite carefully but course times were somewhat longer than I expected – less mud, controls, and route choices next time perhaps!  Thanks, Graeme.

This NiteNav was supposed to have been the first of the season, hence only fairly short, and, so I thought, straight forward. I had set the course using a few old 'tried and tested' controls. There weren't many route options, probably only clockwise or anticlockwise. I had put the controls out the day before (Monday) due to the weather forecast which was supposed to be heavy snow showers on Tuesday. How wrong was the forecast! It had been a dry but frosty and icy cold all day so I felt less guilty for sending out the Navvers in the actual conditions. First out was Paul Haydon who, fuelled with plenty of 'local knowledge' was first back and eventual winner. Controls 4 & 5, the concrete plinths in the woods, gave a bit of trouble with some. I felt sorry for Vince Connolly who was led to believe (by Wai and Ian) that control No5 was missing finished, beating Paul's time, only to discover that No5 was actually still there. Wai and Ian actually went back and eventually found it. Steve and Mick struggled with No4 saying that it could be seen from the main track below but when trying an 'attack point' from above couldn't locate it.
It had been a disappointing turnout but thanks to the stalwarts for turning up and taking part.
Thanks to Bob Howe, Len Small, Ken Wilson and Terry Coupland, who were unable to take part on Tuesday night, for retrieving the controls on Wednesday.
The next NiteNav will be on 3rd December at Gribdale by Mark Edwards.

On a cold but still night 7 hardy souls set out from Gribdale on a quest to find 6 controls some on tracks and some off-piste. I’ve used most of them at sometime or another but usually during the summertime and thought in the dark it would be a bit more difficult. I kept it at 5 miles so hopefully the first back would be about an hour which, with Hodgy and Vince back in just over the hour with just 50 seconds between them, worked out spot on. The rest came in at frequent intervals and it was relief when Steve and Mick finally got back after a search party (Trevor and Ian) went looking for them. Thanks for coming out chaps, and a nice pint in the Oak afterwards, Mark.

Well, what a contrast from last week’s weather. Clear skies, a full moon and a nice temperature. What a great night for running a NiteNav. Thanks to all that turned out and for the positive feedback from everybody. I did anticipate a sub one hour round but Dave Allison missed this by just 30 seconds to win in just over the hour. A special thanks must go to Dave Thompson who flew in from Aussie, arriving back in the UK at midday, especially to take part. That’s commitment for you. Cheers everyone, Trevor.

*Rob Bailey also completed the course, but as a non-competitive runner as he kindly assisted Trevor with the course recce.

Thank you to all who came out on what was potentially a wet miserable night. Fortunately, it didn’t rain and the wind was not as strong as forecast. Apologies were received from Bill - who had gone down with man flu, Ian - who was working to keep our pension pot topped up and Vince - who had to go skiing! The first back was Dave A, followed by Wai, then Mark Edwards. However, that was not the finishing order. There was a dark horse out there who started late in the form of Graeme. Mark had to accept 4th place. We tried to set a course that would give a good walkers route, (CP’s 1, 2, 3/V70, 4 and 5) avoiding the complex route choices of the remaining CPs. A competitive V70 plodders handicap that would challenge the status quo, just check out how close Bob and Bref came to beating Paul. And, of course something for the youngsters to get their teeth into. I think we managed to deliver on all of that. Listening to the conversation/debate in the pub afterwards, I believe the promised 10.5 km and 8.5 km for the full course and the V70 plodders respectively, was delivered but I suspect Paul did a little bit more? I have to admit I didn’t expect to see the option that the runners took, the Smellys once again surprised me with their initiative, lateral thinking and in the case of a certain duo, there adventurous spirit. All in all, a really good night out - Caroline and I were sitting in the pub enjoying a coffee and a bowl of chips while all this was going on! Finally, a big thank you to my beautiful assistant who did a lot of the leg work while I was sunning myself Downunder. She also placed half of the controls on the night and did all of the registration and time keeping - she is amazing! Dave T and Caroline.

Eleven Smellies ventured out on a slightly damp evening and all returned safely. I planned the start from Hutton Village to encourage route choice - the popular option was anti clockwise going to Blue Lake first. Hearing the comments afterwards and looking at Strava a few people more than got their money's worth out on the moors looking for the grouse butt (control 1) and/or the boundary stone.
Vince came in 5 mins ahead of Graeme, with Ian a couple of mins further back, David.

The course route had been devised by Steve and then 'fine-tuned' by me. I put the controls out on Monday morning, given that they were, or so I thought (see later), well out of sight from the public. Steve and I decided to get to Gribdale shortly after 5:00pm in order to give runners and walkers as much daylight as possible. It was a beautifully clear night, although when out of direct sunlight it was really quite cold. The first runner/walker went off shortly after, at 5:16pm. The majority of contestants were off by 5:30pm with just two runners later. I thought that Graeme T was the last away at 17:53pm but Ian H, who had to work late, went out 30 minutes later, and was the only runner to set off in the dark. First back, and eventual winner was David Allison who told us that Control No. 4 was not there. Two or three runners converged on this control and searched in vain for the control and so had to revert to the 'Emergency Controls' envelope in order to discover the grid reference to the next control. He then told us that the information at Control No. 5 had the incorrect GR. It read 599103 instead of 599113 - OOPS!. Fortunately the description was the Enclosure and given that this is the only enclosure on that moor - WHEW!. Last out and last back was Ian Hodgson who actually located the missing Control No. 4 saying that it had been snapped and hidden by a person or persons unknown.
Second place went to Graeme Tweddle with Mark Edwards in third.
Steve and I would like to thank all of the 11 runners and walkers who took part all of whom gave very positive feedback. We hope to see you all back for the summer NiteNav series, Bill.
