The night was clear and not that cold for November (10degC)
- still warm enough for shorts. I designed the course such
that the runners could get a decent run out (about 5.5
miles, depending on route choice) and any 'fast' walkers
could complete the course within two hours or slower walkers
could still bag three or four controls. I think that it was
about 50/50 route direction choice, some preferring the long
run out to control No1 others preferring the longer downhill
back from control No1. Control No6 seemed to confuse one or
two saying that the location description was wrong, i.e. it
was marked as NE corner while and they were convinced that
it was SW. Sorry guys but it was definitely on the NE fence
corner. I felt sorry for Wai who didn't locate No6. He must
have been within 30m of it and hadn't climbed high enough.
Well done to winner David Allison who came in just under the
hour. Second place went to Ian Hodgson who returned back
just over the hour - an excellent run considering Ian hadn't
run much recently due to injury and third place, after
another excellent run, went to first man back, Mark Edwards.
Oh, by the way, apologies for the mud. Thanks to those the
turned up and hopefully we get a better turnout for the next
NiteNav which will be on November 21st from Gribdale,
organised by Mark Edwards. See you there. |

A great turnout on a reasonably nice night, weather-wise.
The Route was about 5 miles long with 6 controls with a
couple of 'old favourites' thrown in - the pond and the
enclosure. Depending on which direction you approached, No4
was a problem on the mountain bike track and Paul and Bob
ran clockwise but it was no problem anticlockwise, even
though I'd put tape, at both ends, to try and make it
easier. Wai had a slight problem with the pond (as usual)
but still came in first, with Trevor and Rob joint 2nd, just
50 seconds later. In third, surprisingly, David A, who had a
big problem with the grouse butt attempting three times to
locate it and, fortunately, eventually did. Thanks to all
who came along. Much appreciated, Mark. |

Thank you to all the hardy Smellies that turned out on a
very cold night to have a go at my NiteNav. When I was
planning the course I considered that the weather maybe
inclement so staying in the woods predominantly paid off
last night. It was interesting seeing how many different
routes were taken, especially PH who took an interesting
route. Wouldn’t have thought of that one. Thanks for all the
positive feedback guys, makes the planning all worthwhile,
Cheers, Trevor. |

On a cold but clear and dry night 12 runners/walkers set out
and fortunately all returned within 2 hours. As always,
there was some interesting and unexpected route choices and
the red and white that I put out to highlight the top of the
mountain bike to no.7 was not spotted by everyone - but
there were plenty of alternate tracks to use.
The fastest to get all 8 controls was Wai, with Paul 3
minutes behind him and Mark less than a minute back in third
place. The top 6 were all within 12 minutes of each other.
Thanks for all the positive feedback. David |

I based the course on an old NiteNav punch card I found
recently, dated 20/12/94, nearly 30 years ago. It was a bit
of a memory jogger for me checking out the course and
discovering that lots of vegetation changes have occurred
since then. Unfortunately, I was unable to use all of the
original eight controls as I had to modify two due to
serious vegetation barriers, mainly brambles (CP4) and young
fir trees (CP3) and delete another two because of time
constraints, which reduced the total from 8 to 6. Len, Ken
and Terry took advantage of daylight going round in the
morning, reporting that all was fine with the controls apart
from CP4 which they struggled a bit with. However, they did
confirm it was in the right place and that it was just their
navigation error. I appreciated this assurance prior to
sending the rest out later. As for the evening, nine runners
turned out to tackle my Nitenav. Weather, despite the
forecast, remained dry all evening. Yet again maintaining my
theory that it never rains on a Tuesday night, well not when
I’m out, that is. Now to the race result and congratulations
go to the winner, Vince who closely pipped David by just
over a minute. Mark was a good third, like Vince and David,
also completing the full course without incurring a time
penalty. The rest of the field had varying success mainly
due to unfamiliarity of the area. This is understandable as
most of us haven’t visited this part of the woods in a long
time, especially Wiley Cat Woods and the now decimated
Westworth Woods. Add running in the dark doesn’t help
either. Well done to all for taking part in what proved to
be a challenging course, Bref. |

Earlier in the day the weather was, to say the least, a bit
'iffy', but on the way out of Great Ayton towards Easby the
hills looked glorious and sunny. Most of the runners/walkers
had arrived at the Dudley 'Overspill' car park, setting off
in the lovely sunshine with the exception of Wai who left it
a little late to take full advantage of the daylight. Steve
set the initial route but after recceing it was concerned
about the way down from the farthest out wall corner - a
very risky descent. We had a discussion on how to avoid this
we finalised the eventual route which seemed to go down well
other than the long steep climb up from control 3, the
second reservoir, up to controls 4 and 5, wall corners. We
did, however, point out the Steve and I had already had to
do this in order to put the controls out!
First man back, and winner, was David Allison in a
blistering sub hour time. Mark and Ian were the next runners
back, running in together, Ian taking 2nd place and Mark
3rd. We half expected Wai to be 'up there' near the top but
due to navigational errors ended up 4th, admitting that he's
been too fast and not taking enough time to thoroughly read
the map!
Thanks to all who turned up on this lovely night making it
all worthwhile, Bill & Steve. |
