The night was clear but cool and fortunately the wind had dropped from earlier in the day. When I had planned the course the ground was dry and the bracken was high but when I put the controls out earlier in the day we'd had torrential rain the night before so much so that Control 2, the 'dried' up waterfall, was now a waterfall in full flow, the bracken had died back a bit so that Control 3, the boundary stone, was almost visible and Control 6, the Crag off the mountain bike track, was very slippery, to say the least. I did forewarn everyone earlier that good studs were recommended. As predicted, some struggled a little with the boundary stone and the Crag, just off the mountain bike track. Poor Dave Thompson struggled with the Crag due to finding the wrong mountain bike track and was, therefore, disorientated believing he was in the right place only to discover he was in a completely different location. The only 'apparent' casualty, on the slipper mountain bike track, was Bob Howe who came down it a bit quicker that he really wanted (on his backside). Most managed to locate the controls without too much difficulty and judging by the post-NiteNav 'debrief' everyone enjoyed the route. The course didn't really lend itself to route choice with, I believe, everyone going round in numerical order. Well done to Ian Hodgson who flew round in just under 53 minutes, 12 minutes behind runner up Paul Haydon. Graeme Tweddle finished in third place, 45 second ahead of Mark Edwards. Thanks to all who came along especially Mick Power and son, Tommy who were visiting the area, and for the positive feedback. Hope to see you all at the next NiteNav on 15th November, organised by Bref O'Rourke at Bank Foot, Bill.

First of all I would like to mention that I was very pleased that several Smellys took up my offer of emailing me for the map so they could go round the course in daylight. I’m a great believer in inclusion and I’m very aware that there’s a small group of Smellys who are no longer keen on navigating in the dark these days. I decided to set a course with options to suit all abilities with different locations for the start and finish.
• The full course included route choices, either stay on the longer tracks or go more direct which involved heather bashing which would test night navigational skills.
• The other option was a shorter but still challenging partial course that was based on the Cleveland Way. As for the evening, unfortunately due to illness to several regulars, numbers were down and only five Smellys turned up to tackle my NiteNav. When I put the controls out in the afternoon the weather was atrocious but by 5 O’clock thankfully the rain had stopped although visibility was still an issue on the high ground maintaining my theory that it never rains on a Tuesday night. On setting out the controls I was forced to scratch CPs 6 & 7 because of a mysterious strong light from an unknown activity on the moor close to CP6. As these were both on the way back to the finish I felt that it wouldn’t detract too much from the main course. Now to the race result and congratulations go to the winner, David, completing the full course in the fastest time despite struggling to find the Siberia control (CP1). Mark was second also completing the full course without incurring a time penalty. Third was Ian who failed to find the Siberia control but found the rest including the very technically difficult CP4. Fourth was Grahame who also missed one control, CP5, mindful of running out of time slowed down by having earlier taken a bit of a tumble. Dave was fifth, deciding to go straight up the incline to pick off the controls on or close to the Cleveland Way coming in well within the time limit. Well done to all for completing a challenging course, Bref.

Not the best of weather to be out on the moors on a Tuesday night in December so thanks to the lads who did run. I used a couple of old favourites for controls and they still caused a fair amount of confusion with some “interesting” route choices but everybody came back safe and sound, well , Bob came back eventually having been so confused he ran back to the same control twice and tried to claim extra points, Mark.

A poor turn out. Only 5 turned up on what was forecast to be a wet and windy night turned out reasonably dry and quite mild. I was pleased with the feedback so it made it worthwhile. I tried to keep the checkpoints reasonably straight forward and have it more based on route choice, which seemed to have worked out with a variety of routes and most keeping to rights of way. As usual Dave A was the quickest round followed by Vince who had a night where all navigation went to plan, then Wai closely followed by Mark. Thanks to Steve for coming out on what looked like was going to be a grim night, he spent most of the time looking for a dropped glove instead of the checkpoints, Ian.

It was a perfect evening for a run in the hills. Ten Smellies turned out to tackle my NiteNav from Clay Bank car park. There was much anxiety in the car park when I described that there were ten controls out there but only eight were detailed on the map. My advice was just stay alert and keep looking. As it turned out everyone, except one, found all ten controls without too many issues. There was a lot of positive feedback at the finish, which is always well received.  The battle at the sharp end was between Ian and Dave ending with Dave winning by 4 minutes, Ian putting in an extra loop for some reason. Thanks to everyone that turned out, cheers, Trevor.

The course, as set, was 7.66 Km with 120m of ascent with 8 controls, of which 5 were clips and 3 were clues. Bob and I arrived early to put out the clips and enjoyed a beautiful twilight evening, no wind and no rain. I don’t have access to all the Strava posts but Paul Haydon recorded 7.63 km & 114m of ascent so we are happy we got that right. A couple of faux pas on our part, was I got the simple maths wrong for the clue at CP 6 (the memorial bench) and we probably should have put some form of reflective ID at CP 4 (the Faber Stone) - every day a school day. As I said earlier the weather was great for a night out on the moors and Bob and I had great fun trying to identify the many lights visible from our vantage point inside a nice warm car. The results however, were quite unexpected, at first it looked like those who took an anticlockwise route had the advantage but there were some anomalies as the event concluded. The big surprise of the evening was ‘Dazzling Dave A’ missing CP 5, quite a significant feature, he tried to straight line it from CP3 and ended up in a bog! Wandering Wai, as usual, got more than his money’s worth, although he forgot to start his Strava so neither he nor anyone else knows where he went, apart from when he almost gave up and was informed by Bob and I, he still had time to get CP 1 so off he trotted for a second time out. The winner was ‘Hodgy Long Legs’ with a time of 48mins 38s. followed by ‘Cool Connolly’ a tad over 11 minutes later. ‘Hassled Haydon’ (got to get home for my tea) came third and probably had the most efficient route around the course. Wai had the biggest smile and Bill and Steve excelled all expectations by beating both Wai and Dave A. Mark came in the middle ground and looking at his Strava, I’m not sure if he was taking it easy after his injuries or just having a Mooch, certainly some strange activity around CP 3, the Grouse Butt. I hope you all enjoyed the event as much as Bob and I did. Certainly the beer and banter afterwards in The Golden Lion was excellent, Dave T and Bob H.

This Twilight NiteNav had been postponed for two weeks due to heavy snow as Steve and I were concerned regarding road conditions up to Gribdale so we decided to postpone it. Since we were fast approaching the start of BST we took the decision to hold back the start until 18:00hrs so that runners had a mixture of daylight and darkness as we didn't want any of the 'fast lads' completing the course solely in daylight - sorry to keep you all hanging about. As Steve and I watched each of the runners (and one walker) set off only two seemed to know the most direct line to the first control which was Mark and Paul. Going up onto the top track made it much more difficult to spot the spring from above. One or two did struggle a little but eventually all found it OK. There were one or two different route choices to some of the controls, some taking more direct lines by 'heather bashing' whilst some took the tracks. This could be seen later on STRAVA with the slight differences in both distance and height gain. Everyone managed to find all the controls and make it back safely. Only one person manage to come in under the hour. Well done to winner Wai! Second place went to Paul Haydon who came in just over two minutes behind Wai with Vince Connolly, almost three minutes later, in third. Hats off to Ian Hodgson who was our lone 'walker' who was only ten seconds slower than fourth place Mark Edwards, and was, in fact, first man back.
Everyone seemed to really enjoy the event so thanks to all who came and took part, Bill & Steve.
