The weather was not very kind to everyone especially Paul who only got 3 controls before ‘rain stopped play’. Everyone else found all the controls but with mileages varying from 7.09, Graeme the quickest (1h 20m 13s), to the longest 9.45miles.
Brown Hill House farm - I have gone through it loads of times in the past and never had any problems but the other Wednesday when I visited the dog which is normally chained up was not. It was not a problem, but it did bark a lot. I think some had the same experience, but some also had encountered cows on the loose there (I didn’t see one at all).
The bridge control 7 – There were a number of comments about mud and I suspect that was from those that approached the bridge from the south over the fields - but that was not the only route. If you went all the way through Westerdale on the road and across the cricket field, you did not need to cross the bridge and was less muddy that way. Thanks to everyone that did it, Terry.

When I originally planned and subsequently 'fine-tuned' the course I wanted have a fairly naturally circular route with just a couple of short 'out and back' controls and also all the clues would be 'natural' with no taping or canes. When I recce'd the route on several occassions it was dry and firm on the ground. Anyway, it seems that for most, until the last day (20th December) for David's run, it was VERY muddy - awe, my heart bleeds............
All of the recce's that I did I went anticlockwise, as the climb was more spread out, so I thought that this would be the 'natural' direction of choice, but I was wrong as several went round clockwise. The controls were all on main paths and fairly straight forward apart from, it seems, one - the post box in Hutton Village seemed to prove illusive to many. I hadn't realised that there was one there until I finalised the route when it caught my eye as I was running past the road end where I happened to spot it on the wall - just glimpsed 'flash of red' out of the corner of my eye. One person even had to ask a resident where it was (I won't say who, so I don't incriminate anyone) .............. Anyway, everyone seemed to find the rest OK.
Congratulations to winner Graeme for a fantastic run and just 3 minutes behind, in 2nd place, David Allison who informs me that he could have been 5 minutes quicker. Third place was a VERY close-run thing with 3 seconds separating Vince and Trevor who ran on the same day.
Thanks to everyone for the positive comments that I received with the results. This makes it all worthwhile, Bill.

We had an excellent turnout given that we'd had 50+mph winds that afternoon when Steve and I put the controls out. Fortunately the wind had abated somewhat. All seemed to be going well when Steve received a phone call from Dave Thompson telling us that, although the cane and reflective ribbon was there, there was no clue information for the next control. Fortunately almost everyone had assembled at control No2, the boundary stone, and we were able to tell them the grid reference to control No3. The laminated control clue sheet must have been ripped off by the strong winds earlier. We were worried in case any more had blown away but in the end all was well. A suggestion was made that in future all competitors will be provided with an 'emergency' envelope that will contain all the control clues and grid references in case a control goes missing. If all the controls are proved to be there and a competitor opens the envelope then penalties would be incurred or even disqualification. This is to be confirmed by the 'elders' whoever they are......... Well done to Ian Hodgson who zoomed home in 55 minutes. Not only was he last man off he was also first home! In second place, just under 5 minutes behind Ian, was David Allison and a great run in third place was Wai Cheung.
A big thank you to everyone for turning up and for the positive comments. It makes it all worthwhile. Thanks. See you all for the summer series, Bill & Steve.
