It was a fairly damp night, with rain leading up to the event. The course was base on Guisborough Woods, Westworth and the adjacent moor, starting from Guisborough Rugby Club. When Steve and I put the controls out, earlier that afternoon, we both agreed that no one could possibly get close to completing the course in the recommended one hour. We thought that the winning time would be around 1hr 10m. How wrong could we both be! Not only did David (the machine) Allison get close to the hour but finished in 59 minutes and was second runner back, after runner up Mark Edwards, having set off last. We were both gob smacked. Anyway what a fantastic run. Mark, and I believe, Keith Wilson struggled to find the grouse butt on the open moor as the cloud had come down and thought they'd found it only to discover it was sheep's eyes! As mentioned in second place, and first runner back, was Mark (Mr. Consistency) Edwards. We thought that Ian Hodgson would give David 'a run for his money' but, unfortunately, couldn't manage to find control No. 4, the wall end, which would have, had he found it, the runner up. Thanks to those who braved the night and to Mark for retrieving the controls.
Hopefully we'll see you at the next NiteNav on November 13th, Bill & Steve.

Eleven hardy souls turned up on a perfect mild, dry evening in an area not used for a NiteNav for some years and hardly known to most of those who turned out. Nether Silton forest is definitely the Big Daddy for orienteering in our area, requiring 100% concentration from NiteNavvers throughout due to the numerous tracks and paths which have to be negotiated correctly to avoid a long night in the woods. To help everyone I decided, perhaps controversially, to issue the map over the weekend so those who were able could recce their chosen route beforehand or those who weren't able could at least familiarise themselves with the map and plot a route of their choice in advance. Also I decided to allow an extra ten minutes to the normal 2 hour time limit.
Looking at the results, I feel I was proved right to make these changes to the norm as it’s clear that they had a positive influence on performance on the night with times being about the norm for the 6.5 mile course.
With David Allison absent in Brazil, Ian took full advantage and came in first well ahead of Mark, Paul and Bob Mitch. While Ian had recced the course, Mark, Paul and Bob did very well as they hadn’t had time to go round beforehand. I was particularly impressed with Mark who had plotted an excellent ant-clockwise route while everyone else chose to go clockwise.
Commiserations to Bob Howe and Keith who had a decent run until they missed the tiny path to Hanging stone from the above track, a risky attack point,  which lost them quite a bit of time.
Apart from the muddy tracks I chose, blame the local hunt for that as they were out en mass when I was putting out the controls, I was surprised to be accused of hiding some controls. Sorry but my motives were to ensure they aren’t stolen as some are right next to well trodden paths.
So, a big well done to everyone for getting round a very challenging course safe and sound. It’s a true testament to your skills in night navigation, Bref

An elite field of nine turned up for the Chop Gate event in icy conditions. The course went out towards Cock Howe where the route choices centred on whether to use the prominent track running north/south as a runnable highway to enable out-and-back forays to controls, or to go for direct lines across open country. Having reccied both there wasn’t much to choose between them, although the former was considerably longer in distance but perhaps a safer option when the mist came down. The main difficulty lay in the mis-match between the rights of way as marked on the map and the actual paths on the ground. Despite this Paul found all the controls and came home first in the fastest time of 1hr 46min for a well deserved win. Mick G was 2nd and Vince 3rd. The only other team to get all 8 controls was Bob and Bref who were out for 2 hrs 40. Paul clocked 10k which was the same distance Terry and I covered to collect in all 8 controls, plus the deleted number 6, albeit in the daylight.
Thanks to all who turned out and to Terry for his help in putting out and collecting controls and in logging runners’ times.
While preparing the course I discovered ‘OS Locate’, a free app which downloads to your phone and turns it into a GPS with 6 figure grid references and accurate height displays. No need to replace my broken Garmin after all! Thoroughly recommended to all Smellies, Keith.

Firstly apologies for getting the checkpoint in the wrong place I had the wrong field corner.
It was a good turnout of 14, I know Arncliffe Woods have limited scope for the run out and back in without having to bash through trees and brambles, I did consider the option of a straight line down from the transmitters or the power lines but it's in full view of the gamekeepers house and Park house is close to the power lines, maybe leave it until the summer. The winner was as expected Dave Allison followed by Paul Haydon, they both went to the CP4 where it was marked on the map and were together and didn't find the CP because I'd put it in the wrong place. Some people went straight to CP4 that was in the wrong place, so it wasn't a complete disaster. It's a good job on my part that it was such a distinctive feature, or I could have been in for more abuse than what I got. There was a bit of a contentious CP near the old church as there is a small path that runs round the quarry and north side of the church grounds, that was to small to add to the map but most people found it, apologies to Wai and Mark who searched the whole graveyard. The other CP that caused a bit of searching about was the spring which was concealed by a bit of marsh grass but everyone found this one. All the other CP's went well apart from lack of time. I tried to give a little route choice across the moor by staying safe with the path or direct line across the heather. Dave Allison took this and he surprised me by following the wall straight down through the wood instead of the footpath and forest track which cost him a bit of time because Paul Haydon caught him back up. Bob, Bref and Glyn had a really good run, the three headlights must have worked well to pick up the reflective tape on the CP's. Well done everyone for safely finding there way back to the start and most people seemed to enjoy themselves. Dave A. won't win the next NiteNav as he's hosting it from Cod Beck, Thanks, Ian.

Well done to the 12 runners who ventured out on a wet, windy & misty night nav from Cod Beck main car park. When I put out controls on Monday night the ground was rock hard and the temperature around zero. Within 24 hours the ground had completely defrosted.
I tried to plan a course that was not too long but gave route choice and the need for navigation. There were at least 3 different route options - but most opted to go to control no. 1 in the woods first. Len & Terry liked the woods so much they spend 45 minutes looking for the control!
Congratulations to Ian who flew round in 53 mins, almost 20 mins ahead of Bob Mitch, who was a further 16 mins ahead of Mark, David.
The next and final NiteNav of this winter series will be on Tuesday 19th Feb from the Hutton Village Road, courtesy of Len Small. See you there.

Thanks to all who turned out for the Hutton NiteNav which saw another victory for Dave Allison in 1hour 11mins who beat Bob Mitchell into second and Mark third place. Dave Thompson and Bob Howe both had good runs and those made the five people who managed to visit all the controls in 2 hours or under and I apologise to those others who found the course either too hard, too long or both. When I set the controls out with Terry we mainly walked round in 1 hour 50 minutes and I was expecting a winning time of under the hour but unfortunately did not appreciate the increased difficulty of the darkness combined with an  abundance of new tracks which were not on the map.We did try to add the new paths to the OS map where they were relevant.  When I first planned the  course I did not have controls number one and four included and the waterfall at number three was an adjacent bridge which would have been easier to find; that course was only 4 miles round and I thought it would be too short so added controls numbers one and four to increase the length to 5.75 miles, and when I discovered the waterfall close to my original control point three I thought it was an idyllic spot and would be nice to include. I think my first plan would probably have been about right, hindsight is great. One good point the last person to finish just beat the start of the heavier rain, Len. Congratulations to David Allison who, yet again, takes the glory and wins this season's series. Runner up is Ian Hodgon closely followed, in third place, by Mark Edwards. Well done guys. Don't forget the Twilight NiteNav which will be on 12th March and will be from the Dudley Overspill car park.

We had a reasonable turn out for this twilight NiteNav. The weather was particularly blustery due to storm 'Gareth'. It started out dry but soon after we had a few light showers. All the controls, appeared to give no problems to most with the odd exception. There were a couple of 'questions' re: the grouse butt but all controls were checked by both myself and Steve with a GPS. We felt sorry for Bob and Mark who seemed to find the wrong set of grouse butts and almost ended up on the Armouth Wath track and so had to double back, eventuall locating the correct one. Poor Ian Hodgson was unable to locate the instruction stapled to the spring fence (you need to make sure you read ALL instrctions Ian!), having been there, I think. I seem to recall that Ian's son, Tom, also failed on this control a couple of years back............. Fortunately Ian spotted others hovering around the grouse butt and so was able to 'bag' the rest of the controls. Everyone else managed to find all 8 controls.
Well done to the 'machine' David Allison who came in at an unbelievable 52 minutes admitting he'd gone slightly wrong at one point. Over nine minutes behind, in 2nd place, was Trevor Symonds, who was first man back, follwed in third place by Mick Garratt.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the route and, of course, generated the usual 'post run' debrief debate, with copious amounts of chips (Thanks Dudley). Hope you've all enjoyed the winter series. See you for the summer series, Bill & Steve.
