Thanks everyone for turning up and enduring one of the most testing of nights for orienteering. I'd planned the course to try and get as much route variation as possible and also a choice of which CP to go for first. I don't think anybody went up the old glider station road to find the glider station which I thought was a possibility for the walkers to do an easier climb. When I set out this CP I didn't think it would provide any difficulties at all. It's a good sized embankment and distinctive with the large levelled off area next to it where the glider station was flattened. I went out to check the CP flags were still there before everyone started and got to the trig point to follow the distinctive track down to the glider station and cut off west early thinking I was on the embankment and ended up going well astray, ending up back on the CW. (I didn't take a compass, as you just need to follow your nose!!) The only challenging CP which I was considering taking out because of the mist, was the crag/boulder in the middle of the moor with no handrails in. I was expecting the main challenge to be route choice. Well done everyone for getting back to Carlton Bank and especially those who got all the CP's on a very challenging night. There was some constructive criticism from one of the elders for putting the CP away from the distinctive feature, which is a fair point, but I didn't want passers by or gamekeepers pulling them out and moving them. The surprise winner was Wai, who made a storming comeback after his long lay off with injury. Runners up were Trevor accompanied by his daughter, local knowledge helps a lot on these trods round the moor. A few of the usual favourites struggled with the glider station CP and ended up having to give up after spending a frustrating time trying to locate the embankment, Ian.

A BIG thank you to the 16 brave smellies who battled through storm “Barney” last night. For my first event as a planner I think I might have over cooked it for some.  However, Dave Allison completed the course in a little over an hour to vindicate my effort to set a balanced course for all.  I found it quite challenging to set a course where many experienced Smellies knew well, but I did discover a new check point for most (check point 2 - viewpoint compass at the track junction leading to Lady Chapel).  I have run past this countless times in 20 years and didn’t realise it was there!  Worth a visit the next time we are over in Osmotherly.  I did not give out the map for the usual 5 minute pre-planning, as I thought I would test everyone’s skill at the start.  I have always found the start quite challenging on previous mountain marathons, so I tried to replicate this. I think this may have contributed to the difficulty in finding check point 1 on the stream/track junction.  On reflection, I think it would be wise to give everyone this 5 minute on all future winter NiteNavs. My optimum route choice would have been clockwise, but only Ian Hodgson concurred with me.  Consequently check point 4 on the open moor land proved a bit challenging. Well done to Dave Thompson (and Ged) who used his mountain marathon technique to find the height with an altimeter and contoured around to hit the check point. Check point 3 was set near the south east corner of Cod Beck Dam. Easy I thought. This also proved to be tricky. Bref is my savior because his words were, “I took no risks and used my orienteering training and followed the hand rail straight to the check point”. At this point, considering his nightmare evening at Carlton Bank, I must give Bref the performance of the evening.  Bref came in 3rd, three minutes behind Mick Garratt and one minute ahead of Paul Haydon in 4th place. I must also give a special mention to Mrs. Cheung and her partner Claire Taylor, who both participated in their first winter NiteNav event. Now you know why we love to run in muddy, wet and  windy conditions hopelessly lost in the dark thinking “Why Am I Out Here?”. The next NiteNav is at the Cross Keys on Tuesday 8th December.  See you there, Wai Cheung.

The weather was kind to us with a crystal clear sky and not too cold at 70C (unlike the soaking that Steve and I got towards the end when setting out the controls that afternoon) and so gave for excellent conditions apart from some wet and mud under foot in some areas. The course covered Eston Moor and Wilton Moor areas. Most runners tackled the route in a clockwise direction and took the 'direct' route between controls 4, the fence corner, & 2, the well top, apart from Vince & Wai who took the 'runners route' along the land rover track. The well top seemed to cause some a few issues locating it but the fence post at the end of the ( now non existant) fence was the handrail as the fence line was shown on the map. Control 3, the tumuli on the open moor, didn't cause too many problems, as I had anticipated, but the quarry gave rise to one or two issues. Everyone apart from John, who just went out for a stroll, managed to bag all of the controls so 'well done'. First place was closely contested with only a minute separating first and second place, the spoils going to 'that man' again, David Allison with Ian Hodgson in second place. Thanks to all who came and participated, Bill & Steve. The next NiteNav will be on January 12th 2016 courtesy of Martyn Hudson.

The evening promised some dry patches amongst the rain but starting from Saltburn everyone was going to get wet feet at least. The river had been in flood in previous days and the route totally changed in the week running up to the night because of the dangerous high levels of water which covered the stepping stones and made any of the various fords impassable. The valley itself can be fairly treacherous with gills and cliffs along the banks and footpaths not marked on the map. Particularly good show from everyone in that no-one missed a control. I based the course on 4 miles and an hour winning time and the only control that presented some degree of difficulty was the mine shaft entrance. But there were wide disparities in times. Dave Allison came in after an astonishing run round in 47 minutes largely made possible by his creative use of the beck to save time and height gain. Wai was pipped to the post by Mick Garratt who, during the Nav, had time to set his tripod up in the mine to take pictures! Good run by all three and great navigation in an area which is an unknown quantity. Trevor and Rob may have saved 3 or so minutes if they hadn’t come back on the wrong side of the beck to the car park! Bref and Bob got the most value for their pound coin though with an epic, if unplanned, run around Skelton Asda and Brotton having taken a wrong turn. Great fun anyway and thanks for coming over to Saltburn, Martyn.

From Clay Bank Lower Car Park. After all the awful weather we have been experiencing lately I booked a clear and cold night to heighten your enjoyment.  The route was relatively short, only 4 miles, but I tried to offer lots of possible route choices, which I think I achieved. There weren't any controls that caused controversy which was good to hear. The feedback I received was all very positive which is great for the organiser, so thank you all.  Well done Dave for flying around the course in a winning time with Ian in hot pursuit. I think we all missed Bref last night, so I would like to wish him a speedy recovery from us all, Trevor.
Don't forget the final NiteNav of the series which will be on 16th Feb at Gribdale organised by David Allison. See you there.

Thanks for everyone who braved a chilly night out and the comments afterwards.
When I tried to drive up to Gribdale early in the morning it was far too icy to get to the top, but fortunately the sunshine during the day melted the road nicely and avoided a last minute change of course. Congratulations to Ian we beat Paul by just 10 seconds, with Wai finishing third - 3 minutes behind. As ever with NiteNavs, people come up with route choices that I had never even thought about when planning the event. Special mentions to Paul for providing the road condition updates, Mr T who choose to handicap himself by leaving his compass at home and to Steve & Len who both told me they were not going to compete and then went out a got all the controls! David.
Don't forget the Twilight NiteNav which will be on March 15th and will be from Newton under Roseberry, courtesy of Steve H and Bill P. It will be the usual twilight Norwegian style format. See you there.

The event was from the Newton under Roseberry car park and covered the area surrounding Roseberry Topping, Newton Moor and Hangingstone Wood. The format was similar to the October twilight event and was of the 'Norwegian' style where each control in turn would reveal the grid reference of the next and so on. It was a very damp, cloudy and foggy night and visbility was extremely poor with most claiming that visbility was worse with the head torch on. When Steve and I put the controls out earlier visibilty wasn't great but not as bad as the evening so well done to all (well, almost) for getting round without too much difficulty. Attendance was limited with only 9 runners who, all but two, managed to complete the course. Performance of the night, was, by far, once again, the unstoppable David Allison who set off last and still managed to arrive back before many of the rest. Second place, 15 minutes behind was, seasoned vet, Mick Garratt. First man back was Trevor Symonds whom we'd thought had flown round in only 56 minutes! However, this was not the case as he could not find the first control and so decided to try some of the random circles on the map to try and complete the remainder of the course. Unfortunately his plan didn't work as he must have found only 'dummy' controls and none actually on the ground.
The first of the Summer NiteNavs will be on 26th April from the Sun Inn, Stockton-on-Tees, courtesy of Bref.
