For a change, Steve & I decided to start the NiteNav from The Voyager car park rather than Pinchinthorpe visitor centre of Hutton Village. The route covered Bousdale Woods and Hutton Lowcross Woods. Whilst setting out the controls earlier that afternoon light drizzly rain started, stopped and restarted so we were unable to appreciate the difficulty that the runners and walkers faced during the event. I even managed to lose my mobile phone en-route so I ran around the course again looking for it but without success - I've since tried ringing it but I think that the rain has put pay to it! The rain fell steadily throughout the NiteNav and due to the warmth of the day visibility was compromised with fairly thick mist on the higher paths such that light from the head torches just reflected back. The first two runners back, within 30 seconds of each other were also first and second place runners, namely, David (the machine) Allison, coming in just a shade over the hour and orienteering expert Rob Bailey. Only four of the nine competitors managed to find all eight controls and a few, disorientated by the visibility, only managed three or four. We nearly had one casualty, namely Bref, who had a mishap at control number 5. Whilst clipping his map he slipped and slid down the stone ramp ending up at the bottom of the gulley in thick brambles minus his head torch. He said that it took him quite a while to manage to scramble out, after recovering his head torch and his dignity. Could have been very nasty indeed so beware all of you in future! The next NiteNav will be at Pinchinthorpe on November 18th, courtesy of Mark Edwards.

First of all a massive apology to Dave and Wai. Sorry Dave I got your overall time wrong. You actually did 10 mins faster than I thought. It wasn't till Bill spotted it that I realised, and Wai I am so sorry, you must have been on a massive high for a few hours thinking you had beaten Dave. Entirely my fault, sorry mate. Anyway, thanks to all who turned up on what was a really mild night, I wanted to make the course as interesting and varied in terrain as possible with plenty of route choice..........but I couldn't be arsed, so I just stuck a pin in 6 places and went with that. Hope you enjoyed it. Well done again to Dave, even with a dodgy torch he's unbeatable, Mark.
Next NiteNav is on Tuesday 2nd December from Square Corner, courtesy of Martyn Hudson. See you there.

A very cold evening with a clear moon saw a good collection of runners off from Square Corner. We brought this forward and not knowing the territory so well placed 1 and possibly 4 in incorrect positions. Mike W wants it on record that it was me not him getting this wrong! As you know some problems emerged around local land ownership, shall we say. Bill always recommends we note to keepers that we are up there – but last time I did this two of our lads ran through the back garden of the gamekeeper!! In any case it is open access moorland but we do perhaps need to rethink our locations at least for the winter NiteNavs. The control had been chucked on the trail junction at 7 – some cut across the moor, at least one person (Mark I think) took the purely track route to both 6 and 7. I had based the route on a winning time of an hour – this was optimistic perhaps. From 7 Bref took a ridge route above Dale Head farm to get back to the CW and then couldn’t find it – his time still testifies to what a superb run he must have put in even bearing that miscalculation in mind. ‘The Machine’ Allison came in ahead with Mark and Wai 3 minutes behind – be interesting to look at their different route choices. Rob may have been a contender if I hadn’t confused him with an incorrect control. In any case I hope you all enjoyed a high moorland run which was the intention. Thanks to Mike for helping me plan the route and to Bob (and Barney) for picking the controls up. The next NiteNav will be on January 13th at Ingleby Cross courtesy of Bref. See you there.

Well done to all who took part in the Ingleby Arncliffe Nitenav, especially Dave Allison(1st), Vince Connolly(2nd), Wai Cheung(3rd) and Bill Pennell(4th) for finding all the controls. Spare a thought for Paul Haydon who had to retire early as he was still struggling with the remnants of MAN Flu.
The weather changed for the worse from the off! No sooner had most of the field set off when all hell broke loose with thunder, lightning, hailstone and snow!  Yet it was lovely sunny weather when Bob Howe and myself put the controls out earlier in the afternoon. Cheers for the help Bob.
Apologies for making everyone wait while I made some last minute adjustments to the map, forced on me as some things had changed from when I last ran over the route in December. I based the course on a circular route through the woods and out onto Scarth Wood Moor and then back allowing for a few route options to make it a bit more interesting. Looking at the results it’s obvious that the moor controls proved to be the most difficult to locate with control 4 being missed by half the field. It wasn’t my intention to make life difficult for everyone but perhaps the OS based map I used wasn’t adequate for this control or perhaps Bob hid it too well – Only joking Bob! Anyway, I’ll try and keep it simple in future.
The next NiteNav will be on February 3rd at Bankfoot, courtesy of 'superorinteer' Dave Allison. See you There.

Congratulations to everyone who waded their way through all the snow, particularly to Paul - who was the first starter and thus set the trail for the other - who just pipped Keith by less than a minute. There were a number of finishers in similar times which being at least partly due to the benefit of following the footprints of others through the knee deep snow on the open land.
When double checking the course out the day before I was very surprised by the depth of the snow on the top, given that there was only a covering at the parking area. I shortened the course due to the slow going caused by the snow and lack of tracks - otherwise it would have been even more of an "epic".
Everyone survived and got to the pub to eat the chips!
The next, and final NiteNav of the winter series will be on Tuesday 17th Feb from Toft Hill, Kirkby, courtesy of Trevor Symonds. See you there.

When putting out the controls on Tuesday afternoon the sun was shining, so promising a clear night for the last NiteNav of the series. A good turnout saw 12 Smelly's heading out into the hills for this 4 mile, 1470ft of ascent event, as fell race status, well that was if you got the lines correct. Watching from the car the sight of lines of headlights heading up and coming down from the hills looked really good. Mind there was a light or two going around in circles not sure if they want to go up or down, you know who you are. Mark showed his fell race and navigation prowess by winning by a clear margin, well done Mark. Thank you for the many positive comments about the route, always good to know the route was challenging without being controversial.
Don't forget the Twilight NiteNav which will be on March 17th and will be from Gribdale, courtesy of Steve H and Bill P. It will be the usual twilight Norwegian style format, but with a new twist.......

The event was from the Gribdale Gate and covered the surrounding areas, including Great Ayton and Coate Moors. The format was the usual twilight 'Norwegian' style where each control in turn would reveal the grid reference of the next and so on, but with a new twist. There were two routes. The pink route, which was clockwise, and the yellow route, which was the same route but reversed. It was a clear and not too cold for March. Attendance was limited with only 9 runners & walkers where the majority managed to complete the courses. Performance of the night, was by far, once again, the unstoppable David Allison and joint second place, were John Smith and Ged Webster, Our hearts went out to Vince Connolly who was totally outfoxed by control No. 2, the cairn. He had spent an age searching for it and must have ran all around it and returned saying that he had retired. Anyway after much persuasion he went back out and we thought that he'd gone to finish the course but returned VERY subdued saying he didn't do the course. I think he'd just gone for a bit of a run. Sorry Vince.
Apologies to Runners on the yellow course due to a 'typo' on the control card at the cairn with the wrong G.R., and thanks to Keith, John and Ged for returning to put the correct G.R. for Bref & Glyn - thanks chaps.
We hope that you enjoyed the event and I'll try not to make any errors in future.
