Crossing the Tees and dotting the eyes……..
So 14 brave souls dared to attempt the 13 mile epic Summer NiteNav I put on last night with 8 successfully completing the long course. Congratulations go to Vince and Wai finishing in an impressive winning time of 2 hours and seven minutes, well ahead of the pack. As I said in my preview the course I set was going to be long, probably over twice the distance I’d normally plan for, but due to the outstanding area and the super features on route, e.g. Girsby metal bridge, the English Electric Lightning F.3 XR718 jet plane and the Vulcan XH563 front bit and the likelihood of us never using this area again I decided to go for it – or rather I made you all go for it! As I escaped unscathed afterwards, unless you were all too knackered, I’ll take it that everyone enjoyed it despite the amount of tarmac on route– 50% Mick Garratt reckoned?
Thanks again to all those who took part, Bref.
Some of you took time to take photos on route so don’t forget to email them to Bill for the SH website and for those who’d like more info on some of the features you ran by here’s a few links……

Despite the black cloud over Osmotherley and the threat of thunder and hailstones, ten runners and two 'groupies' turned up for the Cod Beck NiteNav. The course went from the rim of Scugdale to Oakdale via the booster station, quarry and reservoir. The weather improved throughout the evening and hopefully allowed some of the beautiful views to be appreciated.
First out and first back was Paul Haydon in 1hr 42. This time was subsequently bettered by Ian Hodgson in 1hr 27, Wai Cheung in 1hr 35 and Mark Edwards in 1hr 39.
The course was 9.5 miles by rights of way and most runners managed to shave at least half a mile off this distance. There was a mixture of familiar terrain with a few new corners and linking sections. Bref and Steve made the sensible (if subconscious) choice to incur a 6 minute/30 point penalty in order to nab an 80 point checkpoint and there were some interesting variations in the choice of routes taken. Well done to everyone who took part, Keith

We were gifted with a fine night and especially for some, dry nettles etc. A thank you to all participants for their patience with a novice organiser and having no complaints from local farmers.
I am pleased I put in the walkers route giving all abilities a challenge. In hindsight, it may not be ideal to have pie & peas after, as it puts some time restraints on late starters and compromised Ian’s run. Being in an arable farming area, it restricts the possibilities of free funning and route choice, but I was able to negotiate some discretions with two local farming friends and hope the route was interesting enough. I think Peter the Crown landlord surpassed himself with the pies supplied which I think were enjoyed by all (actually it maybe wasn’t a bad idea after all, just lack of experience on the organiser), Thanks again........Ray

The weather up to Tuesday afternoon had been somewhat 'changeable', however the sun made an appearance and we were blessed with a beautiful warm summer evening, despite the midges. The course had been based around the woods and moors to the south and east of the start, Blue Lake almost being the most westerly control, so everything to the east. The course was very runable and would be a challenge to bag all the controls in the allotted 2 hours but two runners managed this feat - well done. We had a fairly good turnout with 10 runners and 5 walkers. I must apologise for the typo with the answer choices on the clue sheet for the boundary stone date. When I checked my sheet with the 'correct' answers I had put 1860 so I don't understand what happened there with 1911, 1931 and 1951 - probably a case of 'copy & paste' syndrome.... Sorry! I think that other than this 'glitch' all the others were ok, listening to the mainly positive feedback, which seemed to generate a fair bit of conversation in the pub afterwards.
Well done to winner Paul Haydon and to second place Martyn Hudson, who surprised us all so he must be returning pretty much to full fitness after a long lay off and to third placed Mark Edwards. There was only one other runner who managed to complete the course but unfortunately Vince Connolly came in 11 minutes over the time limit and so incurred penalty points. Thanks to everyone for turning up and for the positive comments, making it all worthwhile, Bill & Steve.
See you all at the next NiteNav on July 28th at the Lion Inn, Blakey courtesy of Martyn Hudson.

The days running up to the NiteNav saw awful rain and fog over the route. The map took in parts of Westerdale and Rosedale and touched the heads of Fryupdale and Farndale – so almost a four dales run. Weather on the night was pretty bleak but no problems with visibility. We had some concerns over land ownership and routes so some controls were changed a couple of days before. It was a long course but a winner’s route should have been around two hours. As usual there were some historical features but also a rare tour of Esklets – at the beautiful head of Westerdale and at the origin of the Esk itself. There was a lot of route choice – Bob and Bref had a great run but struggled with the gate at the path head of Danbydale. Bob reckoned they circulated round it by 600 metres. Ian had a good long run with his favourite tunnel entrance but the winner was clearly Dave Allison who sped round and estimated that he could perhaps have done it 5 minutes faster but no more. Dave Thompson also had a great run particularly as he went for the high scorers and came in bang on the two hours. Walkers Steve, Glyn, and Len also bagged a good few.  Next NiteNav is Kirklevington courtesy of Dave Allison.

A good turnout of 14 people for a course of two halves to give a few different route choices. There was a runners loop on footpaths to the west of Kirklevington which I think were new to everyone and a navigators loop through the Leven Valley (with some paddling in the River Leven included for the entry price). Ian Hodgson proved to be best at both and completed the full course in 1 hour 33 mins (taking 38 mins & 55 mins respectively), which was over 25 mins faster than anyone else. It was a Hodgson 1, 2 as Tom finished second beating Martyn (EPO) Hudson just 17 seconds and Vince by just under 4 mins. A few people came in over the two hours and got a few time penalties (1 point per minute / part minute), but based on the comments afterwards everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and got in plenty of miles of running, David.
All was to 'play for' on this last NiteNav for the series winner. Up to this race Paul Haydon was leading but due to Ian Hodgson's tremendous final run took the title away form Paul, who finished runner-up. In third place overall was Vince Connolly. Thanks and well done to all this years participants and especially the organisers, Bill.
Don't forget the Twilight NiteNav which will be at Bankfoot.

The course was set to give a length of about 4 miles with a winning time of around 1 hour, which we were quite close to. The course was based around Battersby Plantation and Moor with plenty of handrails and lots of climb involved. The weather was almost perfect, overcast, dry and clear, far better than when we put the controls out earlier that afternoon where it was mizzley rain and a bit of clag on the top, which did clear. There were quite a variety of varying times and surprises. Dave Thompson had a tremendous night, honing his excellent navigation skills whilst the Hodgson twins missed controls. Dad Ian, who was very honest by confessing to having missed the quarry (the penultimate control) but accidentally stumble across the last control. Poor Tom had written down the wrong grid reference to the spring and spent quite a time trying to locate it, eventually giving up, I felt sorry for veteran orienteer Keith Wilson who couldn't find the 2nd control, running up and down for a while and probably would never have found it as I had been out and retrieved it after an hour! Congratulations to the winner, seasoned runner and orienteer, Mick Garratt closely followed by Paul Haydon, just 30 seconds behind. Steve and I would like to thank everyone who turned up for a great night, including the bonus of free chips at the Dudley, and for all of the positive comments afterwards. See you all for the winter series which should commence at the end of October, Bill.
P.S. I'll be looking for volunteers to organise winter NiteNav events.
