Start from Gribdale Car Park and covered mainly the Coate Moor/Captain Cook's area to the south of Gribdale. What a fantastic night for the first NiteNav of the new Winter Series with stunning clear, starry, sky. We had quite a decent turn out of 16 runners and walkers. Directional route choice was split with most opting to go out via the Cleveland way towards Captain Cook's, in an anticlockwise direction. First back was Rob Bailey in an unbelievable time of 42m 50s only to discover that he'd failed to notice CP7 on the bottom RHS of the map which just happened to be the farthest out control so off he went again. Next home was 'first timer' Sam Garratt in a great time of 58m 26s which we thought would be a winning time......... Sam was closely followed by, Dad, Mick in a great time of 1:04:00 only to find that, after showing us his route choice, he'd also missed a control, CP6, which he went back for as it wasn't too far away. This has to be a first for us where two runners have accidentally missed a control and gone back for it. Believing that Sam's time wouldn't be beaten when in trotted last year's series winner David Allison just 12 seconds quicker. A few minutes later Rob Bailey arrived back for the second time in 1:14:19 which was, given the circumstances, a great time. If only...... Congratulations to David Allison for a fantastic win, just pipping young Sam Garratt. Ian Hodgson came in in third place apparently, like son Tom making a couple of errors. Speaking to Sam afterwards he too said he'd made several navigational errors so imagine if he'd got it right first time! This should be a very interesting winter series so watch this space. See you all at the next NiteNav at Arncliffe Church, Bill & Steve.

Bramble Bashing in the Dark!
A total of 16 brave souls turned up including a couple of new faces on what turned out to be a perfect autumnal full moon evening, all be it very cold, for our latest NitNav based on Arncliffe Wood and Scarth Wood Moor. Dave Allison once again skipped round without breaking sweat to win comfortably from Ian Hodgson in second place. At this rate we’ll have to start handicapping Dave! I make no apologies for using an A3 size map for the event as the normal 1:25000 at A4 size wasn’t detailed enough for some of my controls. On a personal note I at last achieved a long standing ambition of using the quarry ruin for a control which evidently proved quite popular judging by the positive feedback I received afterwards in the pub.  I don’t suppose anyone believed me when I told them the course could be navigated “bramble free” by sticking to tracks instead of short cutting. Anyway, well done to all who took part. Bref.

Well, who can stop the juggernaut that is Dave Allison. Again he comes in ahead of every body else.
On a mild moonlit night 17 'athletes' left the pinchinthorpe carpark at various times to comb Guisborough Woods and Moors and locate the controls that we're put out earlier in the day. I wanted to make this as interesting, diverse and stimulating to the senses as possible.........but I couldn't be bothered, so I just stuck a pin in various places on the map and hoped for the best, I counted everyone out and counted everyone in. No complaints from anybody so I think the check point fairy put all the controls in the right places or as close as dammit so nobody noticed. Thanks for turning out chaps, with Dave organising the next one at least somebody else has fighting chance of winning.
Well done and thanks again, Mark.
The next NiteNav will be on Tuesday 14th January from Square Corner, 2 miles SE of Osmotherley, (GR479959). See you there.

Thanks to everyone for turning up and coming back within 2 hours - and for the positive feedback. Wai & I tried to make a course that had plenty of route choices, with options of taking a direct route or safer/longer route. So it was good to hear all the discussion in the pub later of the various directions taken and that a few people had to dig their compass out on a few occasions. Never ceased to be surprised on the different routes taken that I had not even considered. For the runners I think anti clockwise was best, but there were less handrails and more risks that way.
Congratulations to Vince on the victory, by 2 minutes from Mark. Ian can confirm that the course was harder without any battery life left!  Thanks to Richie Clarke for kindly recovering the controls. David & Wai.

It was a cold windy night and, after all the rain, very wet underfoot. The route was short enough for the winner to get in under the hour. A fantastic piece of thoughtful orienteering by Dave Allison with Charles and Vince not far behind. There was a different route for each runner - I hadn't thought that runners might use the road but of course that was acceptable. The control that seemed to cause most problems was the grouse butt on the stream. Even Dave missed this first time but bagged it on the way back by cutting across from the track corner. The route back across the track seemed to be quicker than cutting direct across Stanghow moor. Most of us only know the moor when we use the Quaker causeway but the area between there and Lockwood beck reservoir is surprisingly full of features including burial mounds, standing stones (The Elgee triangle stone was a control) and the lovely structure on the beck referred to as the Sluice House - although we are not exactly sure what purpose it served. I did also warn all runners about the perilous sides of the waterfall. This did not stop Bob Howe falling/jumping off the top like an Olympic diver. Neither did the fact that the whole course was set on open moorland stop Dave T and John S from going to visit all of the good people at the gamekeepers house, setting off the alarms and lights which caused them to flee in terror, jumping over a wall. Thanks everyone and thanks also to Mike Woolley for his help in planning the course, Martyn.
The next (and final) NiteNav of this series is at Codbeck and is also part of a CLOK event. See the CLOK (and ours) website for full details.

Twelve Smelly Hellys turned out to try the race. In an attempt to introduce some variety, a double sided map allowed runners to use either the conventional OS map on one side, or the CLOK Orienteering map on the other. The map was produced at A4 1:10,000 scale on each side and the orienteering map was updated for the event. This may well have been the first (and possibly the last) event in the history of NiteNav for which landowner permission was granted. Yorkshire Water (who own the Cod Beck plantation and reservoir), the National Trust (who own Scarth Wood Moor and Arncliffe Woods, and Snilesworth Estate (who manage the shooting rights for Scarth Wood Moor and own Near Moor and Clain/Coalmire Wood) were all approached: their only caveat was that the deep heather moor was not to be used, so we had to stay on - or near the major paths. This restricted planning courses a little, and hopefully made for mostly path running and a limited number of technical controls. Also, the event was registered with British Orienteering and open to the orienteering public. A blue and light green line course was on offer as well as the NiteNav 2 hour score event. The NiteNav runners were faced with some new challenges: a choice of map, electronic punching and download, full sized orienteering kites with Scotchlite reflectors, some controls in use that were not on their course and other runners to distract them. Given the novelty and added distractions there were some good performances - especially from the regulars who are perhaps more used to orienteering events, and made use of the extra details on the map. Tom Hodgson absolutely flew round the course in 57:14 despite a slight mistake going to his first control. Tom has been training on this area over recent months so perhaps he had a bit more local knowledge, but still a very impressive run. Seasoned veterans were at least 10 minutes off the pace; Dave Allison, the man to beat this season coming in second, Ian Hodgson was third with a solid run and Bref O'Rourke and Glyn West coming in together in the fourth slot. Unfortunately, a boundary stone - marked on the OS map, proved to be troublesome for some to find. This may have been because of nearby controls proving a distraction, or because of another boundary stone which is 200m SSE of the control. Comparing the OS and Orienteeting maps, the controversial boundary stone control was perhaps a feature shown 25 to 50m differently on each map. However, the control was in plain view, not hidden and visible from at least 100m from the N, E and S because of the prominent Scotchlite tape. It was only from the W side that it was not so well visible. Electronic punching allows us to analyse other runners times who visited this control, suggesting that they had little or no problem finding it. So, with apologies to those who perhaps had their runs spoiled, it would seem to have been a fair control. Well done to Dave for another top performance (clinching the Winter Series?), honours to the Hodgson too. Tom showing his potential.
Thanks to everyone who attended. Mick Garratt and Paul Haydon elected to run the Blue course rather than the NiteNav. I wonder if they bargained for running against some international standard orienteers! Best wishes, Rob.
Don't forget the Twilight NiteNav which will be on Tuesday 18th March from the Hutton Village Road, Guisborough. See you there.

The event was from the Hutton Village Road and covered the area surrounding Hutton Village and Highcliff Nab. The format was similar to the October twilight event and was of the 'Norwegian' style where each control in turn would reveal the grid reference of the next and so on. It was a clear but quite windy night and not too cold for March.
Attendance was limited with only 9 runners who, nearly everyone, managed to complete the course. Performance of the night, was by far, once again, the unstoppable David Allison who set off last and still managed to arrive back before many of the rest. Second place, nearly 12 minutes behind was, seasoned vet, Trevor Symonds, who was first man back. Next back were 'The Swaledale Stompers' John and Mick.
We hope that you enjoyed the event. Maybe next Twilight event we might change it slightly giving alternative routes so that following someone in front may not be an option as they might be on a different route. We'll see......
