A fine dry night ensured everyone had a good night out in the fields and woods around the A19. The course included the medieval village of Stainsby of which many of the competitors visited for the first time. The course was designed for both runners, with lots of fast tracks and walkers with an obvious cut off point halfway to return to the finish. When I set this course out I thought there might be some "local difficulties" in Stainsby Woods. However all competitors seemed to have survived their ordeal without too much trouble managing to dodge the paint guns etc. although Ian Hodgson blamed the car breakers in the beck from putting him off the A19 culvert checkpoint, thus costing him valuable points on the night. Just a normal Tuesday night really,    Bref

A beautiful warm sunny evening saw 17 runners and walker set off on an epic outing. The course had been deliberately set over a very large area covering most of the area between Great Ayton, Percy Cross Rigg and Roseberry in order to give plenty of choice for both runners and walkers. More than expected went for the farthest out controls, one in Sleddale, Hanging Stone and surprisingly a large number bagged Roseberry Topping. Most competitors were within 5 minutes, or so, of the 2-hours limit with only a couple going slightly over - seems like the penalty system works! This enables the organisers to get a pint before 9pm without rushing. There was plenty of 'constructive' criticism of the course but I think on the whole most enjoyed the outing especially given the smashing weather. The sun does shine on the righteous..........

A lovely summer evening with a slight northerly breeze saw a rather depleted number of runners and walkers take on a challenging tour de Rosedale. Mike and I planned the course (in awful weather) to provide an easily navigable tour through some of the best sights of Rosedale including the East Mines and Sherrif’s Pit. This is usual running territory for me but for others it was a new area so we wanted everyone to get a real feel for Rosedale. Almost everyone came off course on the drop down to Thorgill from the mineral railway – with some charges of ungentlemanly conduct and lack of fair play directed against one person who apparently took a rather creative route! There was a positive response to the route but as the navigation wasn’t particularly difficult it was more an issue of who would be fastest round – in the end Trevor pipped David to the post – even after David’s often superior navigation meant that he kept popping out of hedges ahead of Trevor when Trevor though he was far behind! Thanks everyone for coming out to support a Nav off our usual circuit, Martyn.
Next NiteNav is Ian Hodgson's from another new venue at Hawnby.

It was a good turnout considering the weather, the distance to the venue for some and the Saunders and Phoenix just being on the previous weekend. Also there were the folk just coming to form and overdoing it and getting injured. Well done Tom, who was a clear winner and the youngest runner. He’s never been to the Hawnby area before, so he had to read his map and guess where the path went, as there were a few areas where there is no evidence of a path on the ground. The rest of the runners were all very close together with a mixture of routes taken which was good to see. Ian Mac came back early after setting off with Bob and Bill who were setting too hard a pace for him to stick with after his run at the Phoenix on Saturday and also Dave T came back early tired from his weekends efforts in the Saunders, the heavy rain probably dampened their enthusiasm to carry on as well. Hawnby is a lovely area and a bit different to the rest of the North York Moors, with a few prominent hills, pretty streams and valley’s and lesser walked paths and bridleways through woodland. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, it was a shame the rain put a dampener on things and spoilt the views from the tops. It was good to hear everyone had to read the map, not being familiar with the paths in this area and a few got caught out straight lining in the open access areas to get caught up in the bracken. Paul got stopped by a farmer and was asked where he was going, even though he was on a footpath. I’d try to plan the course on how I would like to run round it but then have to consider how I would pick up the checkpoints that weren’t on the outside circuit. I also had to consider that there would be a few walking it and what would be possible in the two hours and still have a bit of interest. Nobody walked it. I also wanted to try and avoid folk using the road for fast running, as for me the enjoyment is running the paths off-road not road running. By luck more than planning the course turned out to lend itself to mountain biking as when you look at the map, most of the checkpoints turned out to be on bridleways or roadside. We’ll have to try and get out to Hawnby area again and the pub had some good real ale on. Thanks to everyone for turning up and it makes it worthwhile knowing folk have had a good run out. Thanks also to Sophie, James and Tom for totalling the scores, no wonder he won so convincingly and getting back dead on two hours, honest! Ian. Next NiteNav is on 7th August at Kirkby, courtesy of Trevor. See you all there.

It was great to see such a good turnout for my NiteNav, 16 in total. Apologies for not getting the weather right, but I don't think it spoiled anybody's fun. I hope everybody enjoyed the course. On paper it looked fairly straight forward just following footpaths around the area and visiting places of interest. In reality not that straight forward as I found out when planning the route. I think it made for an interesting event where navigational skills where required and we all have done our bit to keep open infrequently used footpaths. Congratulation go to Dave Allison who managed all the controls with only seconds left at the finish. The winner of the dirtiest finisher goes to Bref who managed to fall into a slurry lagoon That'll teach him to take shortcuts! I don't think his Smelly Helly tee shirt will ever be white again but will live up to being smelly. A good night all round, don't forget Bob Howe's NiteNav on 28th August at Bank Foot, Trevor.

The fine weather attracted a good entry to Bank Foot for the last of this years NiteNavs. With the Sun shining on the Righteous seventeen competitors set forth in several directions on the course which was probably correctly described as a road run with a few fields added for variation. Strangely, for a road run, the event was won by our inveterate off-roader Ian Hodgson in 80 mins, who beat all the opposition by quite a bit. His favourable comment at the end was that it was a good blast round - it certainly was for him. Dave once again proved that orienteering is not just about straight line speed coming home minute ahead of Bill and Ken in a very respectable time. Paul came home a few minutes later with most of the rest completing in the 1:40s. Our walkers John & Ian collected all bar 3 of the controls with a sprint finish inside the allotted 2 hours. Richie was last home as the moon was rising over Battesby Plantation. There were some interesting routes taken on what I'd imagined was a fairly obvious out and back loop and some times suffered as a result. Most folk collected all the controls although there was some discussion about number 3, with some "misinterpretation" of my intended question. Answers varied from 8 to seventeen and a half, which was my original answer, but all were accepted as proof you'd been there. The promise of a nettle free run was almost true and happily no one came into conflict with the Bull. Everyone seemed to enjoy the trot around the 9 or so miles. Thanks for coming, Bob, Amy & Barney - Bob H.
