The Tom Ellerton
Memorial Uphill Mile & Fell Challenge
Tuesday 27th August
2013
(Photos, hopefully, to follow)
Last Tuesday
(August 27th) saw the first running of the Uphill Mile & Fell
Challenge under the new title of Tom Ellerton Memorial Uphill Mile &
Fell Challenge. We had a fantastic evening especially as the weather
was ideal for running. There was a great turnout of 28 runners of
all abilities and ages, ranging from 16 to 66. There were also three
father and son teams competing. Both the Uphill Mile and the
FellRace were won for the second year by 16 year old Sam Garret who
also managed to beat his own mile record, set last year. The Ladies
winner this year, and first lady vet, was Kath Blakey who was first
lady past the mile marker and also the fell race winner.
After the race everyone retired to the
Dudley Arms for pre-arranged pie and peas followed by the race
presentation kindly performed by Tom's widow, Elayne Ellerton. (see,
at the bottom, some kind words of appreciation from Elayne

Report from Mark Edwards: -
Thanks to Bill and Steve for
organising and renaming this race in memory of Our good friend Tom
Ellerton, I’m sure he would have been over the moon with the lads and
lasses who turned out to take part in what is let’s face it a tough,
tough race. That 1st mile, all uphill is as gruelling as any
start in any race in the Fell calendar, and then another 300 metres
uphill before you reach the summit and turn for a downhill sprint, just
as much lung bursting as the climb. Anyway great effort from everybody
from the runners to the marshals, organisers and Doug for organising pie
and peas, special thanks must go to Elaine for coming and handing out
the trophies. A good night and a great way to remember Tom, long may it
continue, Mark Edwards.
Bref O'Rourke receive these
kind words from Tom's widow Elayne: -
"Hi Bref, I'd like to thank you & all the'
Tuesday night gang' for making me so welcome last night. It was both a
pleasure & a privilege to be included in Tom's memorial race evening. As
you can imagine it was at times very emotional but I found that the
beauty & peace of Bank Foot comforting & the kind words & shared
remembrances of Tom a delight & consolation. He would have been both
amazed & proud to know that you all thought so well & fondly of him but
I know that it was very mutual & that he regarded his outings with you &
the friendships they brought as one of life's greatest gifts &
considered himself a lucky man. I hope you all continue to enjoy your
walking & running &that the weather & good health gods look kindly on
you all, Kind regards Elayne."
The race entry fees collected went to buy a bouquet of flowers for
Elayne. Here is the reply from Elayne: -
"Dear Tuesday night lads,
Thankyou all so very much for the
beautiful bouquet that has just arrived, what a lovely surprise! It was
great to be at the race and I felt honoured to be asked to help with the
prize giving so another 'prize' for me is definitely the cherry on the
cake, you certainly know how to make a woman feel appreciated. Hope you
all enjoy a much deserved good walk tonight. Kindest regards Elayne X"
