Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon, July 6th & 7th 2013

Smellies at Over Night Camp
The Saunders
Lakeland M.M. took place over the weekend of July 6th & 7th in the S.W.
Lakes, the event centre was at Falliss at the foot of Black Combe.I
remember running around these hills way back in October 2000 on the
K.I.M.M. it was a cold, wet, & boggy splodge so my expectations were not
high. However, on this occasion the weather gods literally shone on us,
thankfully there was a little cloud cover at the start of Day 2 but
apart from that it was blue sky and sunshine all the way with great
visibility for navigation and it wasn't too wet under foot either.
Socialising
at the overnight camp was very pleasant on a dry well manicured field
with wall to wall sunshine until way after 9 pm. The pre-ordered drinks
of beer, lager, cola & milk were very welcome and refreshing; just wish
I had ordered another couple of cans.
Representation from the Smellys consisted of a motley crew of Regulars,
Not So Regulars, Affiliates & Friends in the form of; John Smith & Mick
Murphy, Keith Wilson & Julian Hatton, my mate Keith Bell & his wife Sue,
plus Me & my grandson Angus. The latter 2 teams were running in the
Wansfell class Keith & Julian in the Kirkfell and John & Mick in the
Carrock Fell.
Keith and
Sue were involved in a rescue on the final leg of day 2 and consequently
took 40 minutes to descend from the top of White Hall Knott, which took
me & Angus only 7 minutes 15 seconds, this fast descent made up for the
cock up I made on control 2 of day one losing us 10 minutes. You win
some and you lose some but all part of the fun of running around the
hills like a headless chicken.
Me & Angus
came 21st on day putting us into the chasing start on day 2, a first for
me, our final position was 17th in a total time of 7:42:13. John & Mick
were placed 70th overall and 8th in the Vets category in a total time
of 8:46:23 (6:52:20).
Keith &
Julian did even better coming 9th in the Vets & 74th overall in
11:53:29 (10:06:28)
Another 9th
place in the Vets was taken by Keith & Sue who walked there course in
12:35:35 (10:42:15) including rescuing a woman off White Hall Knott
A really
fabulous weekend for my Grandsons very first 2 day Mountain
Marathon, excellent courses with some good running on firm soft ground.
