Day 1: -

Saturday was a bright sunny, but windy day. The group met at Loweswater and began the 5 hour day with a scramble up the summit of Mellbreak at 509m. The leading pack decided to skip the easy track and ascend the more interesting west face. From Mellbreak we headed south crossing Black Beck, passing Scale Force as we headed up towards Red Pike at 755m. Along the Chapel Crags we climbed to our highest summit of the day to High Stile at 806m. From here we retraced our steps back to Red Pike and descended west along Little Dodd over to Starling Dodd at 633m. Next on the bagging list was Great Borne at 616m followed by a sharp descent towards the North. For some, Floutern Cop at 451m was bagged before the final climb to Hen Comb at 509m. Heading down, Northeast, we crossed Mosedale Beck and regrouped to run back down the track to the cars parked at Loweswater. Needless to say that we sampled the local brew at the nearby drinking establishment of Kirkstile Inn (Ian has stayed here and can highly recommend it).

Day 2: -
Sunday’s weather couldn’t have been more contrasting. The full gang met at the parking spot up at Mallen Dodd (Northeast of Keswick). With a force +8 wind and horizontal rain full mountain gear was called for … except for the Hodgsons who decided to test Petroleum Jelly on their legs! Half of the group decided to bag Latrigg at 368m and the other half made their ascent up to Little Mann heading towards Skiddaw summit at 931m. The leading group passed Little Man and decided the weather was against us to make a safe summit to Skiddaw and headed east to Sale How at 666m. Skiddaw House Hostel looked so tempting, but we skipped on down along the Cumbrian Way taking shelter from Lonscale Fell. This ADVENTUROUS group were in high spirits as they crossed the torrent water of White Beck (see photo). I say adventurous because as we arrived back at the car park we had discovered the “Men of The Mountain” group had already returned back to the car and headed off for tea and cakes at Rheged!!!

A fantastic weekend was had by all. Special thanks to Andrew Watson (Aberdeen) and Joy O’Flanagan (Chamonix) who travelled from afar to join us.
