Saltergate
Thursday Walk June 2013
By Len Small
On a bright and sunny 6th June at 9 o'clock
four walkers, Bob,Glynn,Mick and Len along with dogs Kirby and Barney
left the car park at the Hole of Horcum bound for Malo Cross which soon
came up following a gentle descent.

The route then turned South to Newgate Foot
and the party headed for the Bridestones where we stopped for
refreshment before continuing through grassy meadows to Low Dalby. After
a steep climb the temperature had risen, to what turned out to be the
hottest day of the year so far, there was another stop at the Fox and
Rabbit Inn. The locally brewed North Yorkshire Beer was sampled and we
felt it could be recommended to Bref.

Then onward and a long descent through Cross Dale to Farnwath to hear a
steam train and see the carriages but any view of the train was
obstructed by trees. Walking alongside the railway we were again too
late to see the steam train leaving Levisham Station for Pickering,
lunch was eaten on the station platform while we watched the expert
exchange of Tallies as a Diesel train passed through. We also learnt
that the Forestry Commission have recently stipulated that the station
can only sell ice cream on 100 days a year and the 6th June was not one
of the 100 days. One wonders who came up with this rule and why.
More climbing now up to Dundale Pond and then descending through Dundale
Griff which became very steep sided, resembling a gorge. The final
section was through Horcum Slack and ascending out of the Hole of Horcum
to the car park. The distance was 15 miles with 600metres of climbing and
the party complete with two tired dogs returned at 15.45.
