Coniston Fell Race 5th May 2012 by Mark Edwards.

BREF IS BACK.

All hail the legend that is Bref O’Rourke, The veteran of the Bob Graham Round, Cleveland Classics, Wheeldale tandems, Mountain Marathons, Classic Fell Races, numerous LDWA events and in the last 4 years 2 NEW KNEES, yes 2 NEW KNEES, is back on the fell race scene.

Saturday May 5th 2012 was the Coniston Fell race at 9miles, 3,500 ft of climb over Wetherlam, Swirl how and Coniston old man, Bref came, he saw and conquered this tough course as though he had never been away, in a time of 2hrs 30 min’s, well inside of his predicted time of 3 hrs.

This man gives hope to all who think old fell runners just fade away to a comfy chair, slippers and a pint of real ale, well the pint of real ale is there but no slippers and the comfy chair is in the pub after. Who knows what’s next, the Borrowdale? The Ennerdale?

So if you think you have a niggle in the knee or cramp in the calf, get some gravel in your gut and follow Bref’s example Just Do It,

Mark Edwards

There were also other 'Smelly Helly' members competing at this race, namely Trevor Symonds (1:50:44), Mark Edwards (1:53:47) and Bref (2:28:24). Well done everyone.
