On a fine evening a hardy core of Nitenavvers set off from the rear of the Black Bull in Yarm. Unbeknown to any of them a 2 map course lay ahead based mainly on the north side of the river Tees. After briskly completing map 1 (This is too easy what's the catch?) most seemed unimpressed when handed map 2 on the bridge in Yarm high street, especially Bob who I'm sure whispered an expletive under his breath when handed the second map! Dreams of an early pint instantly shattered! I decided on a two map course so as to reduce the risk of someone getting run over by using John Wood to control runners crossing the Yarm Road bridge. As for the route? I found the area naturally lends itself to a figure eight course so it was easy to map out two loops based mainly on the Teesdale Way, on the Durham side of the river Tees, with the start and finish on the Yorkshire side at the rear of Yarm's best pub, the Black Bull. As expected, Dave Allison romped home well ahead of the rest. Not surprising on his current form plus the fact the course was literally in his own back yard; he ran past his own house en route. So well done to all who took part and a special mention to my right hand man last night, John Wood. Without his assistance I would have struggled to use the planned route -  Bref

I was surprised when I turned up to see so many of you all ready to start, sorry for that and reducing your time in the pub. I planned the course to cross the valley road a few times with hopefully exploring paths that you weren’t too familiar with. For me it’s not the finding of the checkpoints, it’s the exploring of new areas and seeing familiar areas from a different perspective. I tried to make the checkpoints simple with hopefully not too much scope for going off-piste and upsetting the local landowners.
The way I’d numbered the controls seemed to set most people off down the west side of the valley skirting all the farms and ending up at Seave Green before they knew it and getting short of time for the run back up the valley which wasn’t so straight forward. Dave Allison (Scottish over 50 score champion) flew round in an amazing time of 1:41 and the only one getting all the checkpoints. If my scoring was right Vince was second who went to all the checkpoints but couldn’t find the lock on the gate and a very fit Bob Howe blasting round in 3rd. Thanks for all the appreciative comments, it makes it all the more worthwhile, Cheers, Ian.
Good to see a couple of newcomers, Ian's mates, from Esk Valley, Bill P

Please note that there were no penalties as Ian hadn't scored the the controls.

This was an evening of very mixed weather. On the way up Dykes Lane the rain began to bounce down with even some hail stone thrown in for good measure. Once parked up no one appeared too keen to get going! However, in a very short time the sun came out and we had a lovely evening from then on with only an odd cloud that 'threatened'. We were a bit thin on the ground with only 9 runners and walkers probably due to a few recovering from the weekend's LAMM and perhaps some on holiday.
Due to the size of the area there was plenty of scope for controls so both sides of Gribdale were used, i.e. Great Ayton Moor/Newton Moor to the north and Coate Moor to the south, linked by Lonsdale/Percy Rig. A couple of controls had been recycled from previous NiteNavs and fortunately nobody managed to remember the answers. Sorry about the missing padlock near Lonsdale farm. It was there on Monday night - honest gov.......
Once again, in true fashion, David (the machine) Allison absolutely blitzed around the course in an astonishing 1hr 30m over 15 minutes ahead of second place Mark Edwards, fresh back from injury. Third man home was newcomer (a veteran but new to our NiteNavs) Keith Wilson. Only the first two managed to bag all the controls, worth 700 points, and everyone managed to return 'penalty free' (just).
Thanks to all who turned up and for the positive comments - Bill & Steve.
The next NiteNav will be on July 8th from the Lion, Blakey, courtesy of Martyn Hudson. See you there.

Ten runners turned up for the Rosedale Nav which is usually down on numbers because of the distance to get out there. The Nav was designed as a circular with the points thought about careful in order to challenge runners to think about strategy. The central challenge seemed to be to evade irate farmers however. The course was planned on both sides of the Rigg in Rosedale and Farndale. Most runners chose the Farndale route although the right of way from the pile of stones near the old railway into Farndale was further to the North West leading to some rather creative route choices. Most of the points could have been picked up in Rosedale and only Dave Allison made the most of both valleys going out to the war memorial at Hilltop. Although he was late back he clearly picked up most points. Other runners also accrued penalties for late returns. The weather held off but the cloud formations on the evening were amazing for the time of year and in such lovely places as Farndale and Rosedale.
The next NiteNav will be on July 29th from Toft Hill, Kirkby, courtesy of Trevor Symonds. See you there.

A fine and dry night saw 8 hardy soles attempt a course that included a fair amount of climb.  This was deliberate as the next nite nav is on the beech so wanted to mix it up a bit. Starting from the Toft Hill scout camp eliminated any road work from Kirkby and saw competitors hitting the climbs within a few hundred yards. It was good to see competitors heading off in different directions and attempting the route both clockwise and anti clockwise. It was also great to see Dave and Mark appear from different directions to race each other for the line. The route was obviously evenly biased, either way, as they had started very close together. Thanks to everybody for turning up and for the good comments both on the night and via email, it makes organising a pleasure, Trevor.
The next and final NiteNav of this summer series will be from Redcar, Coatham Sands, courtesy of David Allison. See you there.

One summer’s evening a couple of years ago I parked up at Majuba Road Car Park a went for a run along the beach and onto the South Gare. When coming back through the sand dunes and post industrial landscape I thought it would be a great area for a night nav. A turnout of 16 people (in the summer hols period) and everyone’s comments afterwards suggests that you agreed with me. As an added bonus there was a rainbow visible over Redcar at the start for some starters and the later finishers also got To see a great sunset. There is loads of detail and fascinating industrial leftovers the area, particularly as you get further west in amongst the ponds by the steelworks and onto the Gare. As I was using a scanned map I tried to use obvious features – several of which I added to the map myself – as well as planting a plastic fork on a man made island in the middle of the boating lake (control no.8).
Congratulations to Vince on getting around all the controls just under 3 mins ahead of Trevor, who was just ahead of Mick G and Mark. Special mention to John who burst into a sprint finish (yes really!) at the end, David

The last NiteNav of this summer was the twilight event and was ran as a 'Norwegian Style' event with only the first control grid reference supplied. The NiteNav was from Clay Bank car park and covered the moorland area and woods on the west side, around Hasty Bank, and Cold Moor. The route was set out an a figure of eight with a long distance between control 2 and 3 and gave the runners a decent run out - about 5.5 miles. The night started out very wet but eventually dried up and the midges came out in force, especially at the car park! There was a little confusion at first re: the concept but most finaly managed to grasp it (this is the 5th time we've organised this style of event). Paul was the first out and returned first, with Trevor chasing hard. Mark Edwards was looking favourite to take the crown having beaten reigning champion David Allison's time only to find Ian Hodgson sprinting down the road from the opposite direction a few seconds later, in less than an hour. When Steve and I set out the controls we each took a different route back from the last control. Steve opted to return via the lower forest track and I climbed back up to the moor edge path and Steve returned around 4 minutes quicker and even admitted to having walked the long climb. If Ian had stayed low and returned via the lower route we probably would have finished around 55 minutes. Thanks to everyone who turned up, despite the rain. The winter series starts in October, the first one being on Tuesday 28th, from Gribdale courtesy of Steve and Bill. See you there. (P.S. Organisers required for the winter series).
